Bloodstock Bound: Mantis Defeats Jaguar

As Bloodstock gets closer, we delve deep into the line up to find out more about some of the bands playing the New Blood and EMP stages at this years event.

Today we chat with Mantis Defeats Jaguar

The Razor's Edge: Please introduce yourself and your band mates.

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: So we got Mex on guitar who provides the raw power on the tracks. Jimmy, Who’s bass brings the groove and structure. Our drummer Pete who holds us all together with thunderous beats and finally myself, JP on vocals. Together we like to create funk fueled energy and bring people together. We also sweat a lot. I mean like, it shouldn't be possible to sweat that much but we do, A lot. So yeah, We are Mantis Defeats Jaguar.

The Razor's Edge: How would you describe your sound?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: Funk Metal. Heavily influenced by Chilli’s, Living Colour & Rage. With elements of a more modern sound like Deftones or Bizkit. Also hidden gems like O'Funkillo (Spain) & Maximum the Hormone (Japan).

The Razor's Edge: How did you land your spot on the Bloodstock bill?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: We still can’t believe it but we were fortunate enough to play our way through Metal 2 the Masses Birmingham which was an incredible experience.

The Razor's Edge: How tough was the competition this year?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: The competition was fierce and one that could have been won by so many of the competing bands. We have a new found friendship with fellow finalists Dreamboat Emperor. A 3 piece instrumental band who’s incredible sound takes your breath away. Also Dying Addiction & Bldsugr are one’s to watch but honestly, there were so many great bands and proof that the underground metal scene in Birmingham is thriving.

The Razor's Edge: What does playing at Bloodstock mean to you?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: It truly means everything to us right now. It hasn’t sunk in yet but is one of our proudest moments in our journey. It’s the culmination of hard work and commitment paying off. We feel blessed to be where we are and we are going to cherish every single moment of the weekend. We really can’t wait to get the party started.

The Razor's Edge: For people who’ve never seen you live, what can they expect at Bloodstock?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: “We came here to party!” Indeed. We will be giving you our all and leaving it all out there on the stage. Blood, sweat and tears most likely and probably in that order too. We hope to create something special and give people something positive to smile about. It’s all about the energy, from the first note to the last it will be party vibes and you are all invited.

The Razor's Edge: What day are you performing?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: Saturday which is cool because we will be 3 days deep by the time we play. Hopefully this will give us plenty of time to go out and talk to people and gather up a bit of interest.

The Razor's Edge: What other bands are you looking forward to watching at Bloodstock this year?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: I would say for me, our three headliners, Orange Goblin, Backseat Juliet, Fear Factory, Ministry, Static-X. Is it ok to say them all? I will say we are also very much looking forward to the food vendors on site this year. We have had a good look and we can tell you that we will be indulging over the weekend.

The Razor's Edge: Playing the New Blood Stage is just the first steppingstone in a bands journey. What’s next in your plans for world domination?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: We have to keep doing what we are doing and the main thing is keep enjoying it. We are always busy writing and rehearsing and we have a song recorded that is almost ready for release. It should be available later this year. It’s a fan favourite so we are very excited to get it out there. We will continue to promote ourselves and keep pushing onwards whilst supporting the local scene and playing all our favourite venues.

The Razor's Edge: Are you camping with the fans? Which campsite are you heading for?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: That is up in the air at the moment. We will be camping that is for sure. I believe we will be the ones sharing a large tent flying the Mantis flag so come say Hi.

The Razor's Edge: You’ve gotta keep hydrated at Bloodstock, what is your drink of choice for the weekend?

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: Water, Coffee & Coke. Dare I say it. If I'm feeling particularly rock and roll I may even have a full fat coke. I’m sure the lads will make up for my sobriety by drinking plenty of Stella, Guinness, real ale & cider.

The Razor's Edge: See you at Bloodstock in a few weeks!

Mantis Defeats Jaguar: You will and we can not wait! Thanks and see you there.
