Bloodstock Bound: Z Machine
As Bloodstock gets closer, we delve deep into the line up to find out more about some of the bands playing the New Blood and EMP stages at this years event.
Today we chat with Z Machine
The Razor's Edge: Please introduce yourself and your band mates.
Z Machine: Howdy, we’re Z Machine. We’re comprised of Rob Harrison (saxophone), Lester Greenhalgh (drums), Maddy K (bass), and Owen Rosser and Gareth Piper (guitars).
The Razor's Edge: How would you describe your sound?
Z Machine: We would describe ourselves as falling somewhere between progressive rock and jazz fusion, but rest assured we have plenty of heavy elements in our music as well.
The Razor's Edge: How did you land your spot on the Bloodstock bill?
Z Machine: Having previously entered the M2tM competition, this time we sent a speculative email to Simon Hall knowing he is a fan of progressive music and we were lucky enough to be offered a slot on the EMP stage.
The Razor's Edge: What does playing at Bloodstock mean to you?
Z Machine: Both Owen and Gareth have been long time attendees of the festival and Owen has played there before in 2010, this will be a great chance to share a field with some of metals biggest names and a great opportunity for Z Machine to have our music heard by a wider audience.
The Razor's Edge: For people who’ve never seen you live, what can they expect at Bloodstock?
Z Machine: A mixed bag of musical weirdness, but danceable musical weirdness. We’re all instrumental so you don’t have to worry about crowd chants either!

The Razor's Edge: What day are you performing?
Z Machine: We are playing on the Sunday, on the EMP stage.
The Razor's Edge: What other bands are you looking forward to watching at Bloodstock this year?
Z Machine: Mastodon, Gojira, The Black Dahlia Murder and 3 Inches of Blood.
The Razor's Edge: Playing the EMP Stage is just the first steppingstone in a bands journey. What’s next in your plans for world domination?
Z Machine: Acquiring weapons grade uranium and breaking into crypto scams. No, we have some more festival appearances this summer and we’re working towards our next musical releases.
The Razor's Edge: Are you camping with the fans? Which campsite are you heading for?
Z Machine: No, this will be the first year that Gareth and Owen haven’t camped at Bloodstock for around a decade, we will only be there for the Sunday this year.
The Razor's Edge: You’ve gotta keep hydrated at Bloodstock, what is your drink of choice for the weekend?
Z Machine: You can’t go far wrong with good old H20.
