DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Jolly Jackers

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Jolly Jackers

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Jolly Jackers sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Rea - Can I cheat right away? I'm too polyjamorous to choose only one album, but I have a ‘PUNK SH!T’ playlist on Spotify I definitely cannot live without. It has songs from Blink 182, The Offspring, Sum41, Green Day, Die Toten Hosen, Skindred and so on… (if I can't cheat, well… maybe ‘Blurryface’ from Twenty One Pilots, because it's one of my ultimate Summer-albums, and this way I can make myself believe that we are on holiday, not shipwrecked:D)

Ilka - I’d choose any Sting album, because his music always calms me down.

Mark - Skunk Anansie-Post Orgasmic Chill - This album brings together everything that defines music.

Simi - I almost said Metallica - Black Album but then I changed my mind and I would choose Dave Matthews band- Before These Crowded Streets

Eneh - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium - because it is a double album.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

We agreed to switch the posters on the wall every week. 🙂

Rea - ‘Dead Silence’ by Billy Talent. Great album, amazing artwork (also I love blue and green) and well… Sharks! Fitting the theme!

Ilka - Pink Floyd- The Dark Side of the Moon- It’s strongly connected to the world of visual arts.

Mark - Korn - Follow The Leader- The cover is done in a comic book style — and the best part is, it folds out!

Simi - I’m being serious—I said it before Rea!!! Billy Talent - Dead Silence - just picked one at random, and it’s even shark-themed, so it fits the vibe perfectly.

Eneh - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard- Oddments- I could look at any of their covers for hours- time would fly by faster.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Rea - My first thought was a craft beer, preferably some unfiltered wheat, but come on, we have to think about surviving, so gimme my mom's homemade elderflower lemonade, that hits the spot (and the hydration)!

Ilka - Coffee! Because honestly, I couldn't get it any other way on a deserted island. And if there's actually a coffee plantation there, then I'm out of luck 😀

Simi - alcohol-free beer

Mark - a pint of Jack

Eneh - Tonic, because it quenches my thirst, yet it’s refreshing and fizzy.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Rea - That would be my white Tour of the Setting Sum T-shirt from the Sum 41's last tour. It's a great memory with one of my favourites, has a cool design, and also it's white, so I'll be just a liiiittle safer from a heat stroke.

Ilka - Guns N’ Roses

Mark - Faith No More - Angel Dust - This is the shirt I lost, and I really wish I still had it.

Simi - Suicidal Tendencies t-shirt

Eneh - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Because it glows in the dark, which is really useful on a deserted island. Maybe a helicopter would fly over us at night — how cool would it be to survive thanks to a merch T-shirt?

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Rea - Honestly? I would love to be with them, we are friends, known eachoter for a long time and I love being with them, we could finally have a holiday together, and I think we would write some killer songs sitting around the campfire too! (But let's be honest: I would miss my family and cats on day one, and I'm very antisocial, so my kitties would be my other choice!)

Ilka, Mark, Simi, Eneh -  We’d choose family, but we still like each other — and each other’s families too! And our cats and dogs!

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Jolly Jackers

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Rea - Adele's 2011 Royal Albert Hall show. I love that woman, the setlist was *chef's kiss*, and she was a delight. Everytime I listen to that concert, in one moment I'm laughing my ass off over her stories and jokes, in the next one I'm a sobbing mess because of her angelic voice and sad songs. I love it!

Ilka - Lajkó Félix concert- He is a genius and music itself.

Mark - Black Sabbath- Novarock - That concert was a really memorable and defining experience for me.

Simi - Battle Beast - Budapest Barba Negra - I attended this concert with my daughter, and it turned out to be a truly defining and unforgettable experience.

Eneh - Óperentzia - NF Green Festival - Besides having the chance to see my biggest idols and world-famous bands live, I can say that this concert was a truly defining experience for me — it took place at a festival with no more than 300 people, where we danced barefoot on the sand. And this concert was unique and unrepeatable because there is no recording of it.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Rea - Ken Casey from Dropkick Murphys! Have you seen the guy? He just went to Ukraine with an ambulance to help out the volunteers. Amazing person, and I'm certain he would do anything to help if we asked.

Ilka, Mark, Simi, Eneh - We agree with you, Rea, but realistically, we all know that only one person would be able to help.: Balázs Acélos form Don Gatto band.

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Rea - That would be me! I have the most tender meat on my bones (Enéh and Simi are too muscular with no fat, Ilka and Márk are lean supermodells), and I'm also vegetarian so my portion of meat would be wasted. Also herbivores are more delicious I think? I'm the logical choice! Kill me please! 😀

Ilka, Mark, Simi, Eneh - We retreated and, in a rather undemocratic decision, decided to sacrifice Rea since she’s vegan and accidentally ate a toxic unknown plant, saving her from pain and a slow death.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Rea - That is a hard question, but maybe Hans Zimmer. His music was with me my whole life, he has such a unique story, he is the proof that with music, everything is possible. He is the best composer of our generation, stayed humble after all this time and the way he genuinely loves music inspires me everyday.

Ilka - Freddie Mercury

Mark - Tony Iommi - Finally, someone who can lend me a left-handed guitar.

Simi - Lars Ulrich

Eneh - Flea

So, we have a songwriter, a drummer, a guitarist, a singer, and a bassist — an amazing superstar band that we created
