Bloodstock Bound: Groom The Giant
As Bloodstock gets closer, we delve deep into the line up to find out more about some of the bands playing the New Blood and EMP stages at this years event.
Today we chat with Groom The Giant
Please introduce yourselves.
I’m Jake and I play bass in Groom The Giant. The other Jake handles guitar and vocals, Taran is on keys and vocals, and Laz rounds out the line up on drums.
How would you describe your sound?
We’ve always described ourselves as Wizard Grunge. At our core we’re probably closest to stoner rock, but we like borrowing from all over the place. There are elements of metal, psychedelia, grunge and classic rock in what we do, so we’ve never really fit neatly into one genre.
How did you land your spot on the Bloodstock bill?
We won the Wrexham Metal 2 The Masses final!
How tough was the competition this year?
Really tough. Every band we shared the stage with brought their absolute A game. The best part was getting to meet loads of great musicians and hopefully we’ll be sharing stages with them again in the future. Like every band, though, the hardest part was the weeks of preparation and making sure we were ready when it mattered.
What does playing at Bloodstock mean to you?
It’s massive for us. We’ve spent the last four years putting everything we’ve got into this band, so getting the chance to play Bloodstock feels like a huge milestone. Hopefully it’s the opportunity to get our music in front of a whole new audience and show people what Groom The Giant is all about.
For people who’ve never seen you live, what can they expect at Bloodstock?
Big riffs, big grooves, plenty of energy, and hopefully a few surprised faces. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we take the music seriously, and we always give everything we’ve got on stage.
What day are you performing?
Sunday
What other bands are you looking forward to watching at Bloodstock this year?
I’m a big Lamb Of God fan. I think I’ve seen them about six times, but it’s been a few years, so I’m really looking forward to seeing them again. I’m also hoping to catch Bad Earth, another Wrexham band who won Metal 2 The Masses last year.
Playing the New Blood Stage is just the first steppingstone in a bands journey. What’s next in your plans for world domination?
Right now we’re focused on writing and recording. We’re hoping to have our debut album together in the near future, and then it’s about getting out on the road and playing as many shows as we can.
Are you camping with the fans? Which campsite are you heading for?
We’ll be at the festival all weekend, although I think we’ll be in the artist campsite. None of us have been to Bloodstock before, so when we’re not playing we’ll be out exploring the festival, watching bands and hopefully chatting with as many people as possible.
You’ve gotta keep hydrated at Bloodstock, what is your drink of choice for the weekend?
Beer… although I should probably admit there’ll be a fair bit of water mixed in too!
