Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil’s Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It’s not your average desert island and we’ll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil’s Island we find A Permanent Shadow sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil’s Island?

Welcome to The Razors’e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don’t worry about it’s name I’m sure it’s not as bad as that would suggest.
You’re marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn’t live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
David Bowie’s Station to Station. It’s a record I could never tire of. To me, it’s the perfect album: short, varied, exciting, unique. Even after so many years, there are always new layers to be discovered, both musically and lyrically. And, oh, the irony, to be stuck in one place and choose a record called Station to Station.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to sleep in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose and why?
I’d go with Nadine Sha’s Fast Food. I think Nadine’s voice is amazing, and her music is gorgeous. She’s also a very beautiful, exotic woman with a lovely profile, as pictured on the cover. I’d choose this cover as I think I could stare at if for hours.
There’s also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What’s your tipple of choice?
Having been teetotal for years, my drink of choice would be a Radler 0.0%, a beer and lemon beverage of Austrian origin.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
AnI would hang on to my The Cult 1986 T-shirt which I’ve had for ages. The shirt has the original line-up on it, with Jamie and Nigel as rhythm section. The Cult still rule and I think they’ve never made a bad record.swer
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Luckily, I have no bandmates, what with A Permanent Shadow being a kind of solo project. That said, some female company would be more than welcome.
There’s a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
I’d choose The The’s Comeback Special from 2018. Just a very well executed, beautiful overview of Matt Johnson’s career and incredible songwriting. If bootlegs were admitted, I’d go for Lou Reed Live in Milan in 1989. I attended a different 1989 show by Lou, and it was the most amazing gig I’ve ever seen. To this day, it stands out as the most terrific live show in my life.
You’re getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
My message would go out to Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. He’s a pilot and could get me off the island in a heartbeat.
You’ve been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There’s only one thing for it… which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
I would have to start chewing off my own calf, I guess. Imaginary friends, of which I have a few, don’t kill the hunger.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
If he were still alive, I would have saved David Bowie, though I have the feeling he could have taken care of himself. Of the people still around, I’d save Nadine Shah.
