DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Those Made Broken

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil’s Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It’s not your average desert island and we’ll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil’s Island we find Those Made Broken sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil’s Island?

Welcome to The Razors’e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don’t worry about it’s name I’m sure it’s not as bad as that would suggest.

You’re marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn’t live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Murray – “For me it’s Rio by Duran Duran. It’s been my favourite album since I was very young and nothing over the years has changed my mind. I think it’s pretty much a perfect record, with some of the greatest melodies and basslines of all-time. I’ll fight anyone who disagrees with me.”

Scott – “Having had this conversation with these guys previously, I’m pretty confident I know what they’d bring, so I’d go for ‘Little Earthquakes’ by Tori Amos to change the mood somewhat.”

Hutch – “While there are several albums that instantly popped into my head.. I’d ultimately choose DIRT by Alice In Chains…its my favourite album of all time..perfect song writing…heavy..dark..beautiful..Jerry Cantrell’s guitar tones..the riffs..the vocal harmonies…Layne Staley’s voice…Sean Kinney and Mike Star’s pummelling rhythm section ..Perfection.”

Paul – “For me, it would have to be ‘If You Want Blood’ by AC/DC. This was the first album by them that I heard when I was aged nine. It totally blew me away from the first track to the last. So much energy from five guys ripping into their instruments like there was no tomorrow. Masterpiece.”

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to sleep in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose and why?

Murray – “Dirt by Alice in Chains. Incredible cover, instantly recognisable, and one of the best and most influential albums of the last 30 years. It’s probably one of the only ones all four of us would agree on!”

Scott – “Being a bunch of guys stuck on a desert island together – that would surely lead to some long, lonely nights. With that in mind, I might go for something like ‘Xavana, Uma Ilha Do Amor’, by Hareton Salvanini. If you know, then you DEFINITELY know!”

Hutch – “I’d choose the cover of Sheryl Crow’s self titled album…I was slightly obsessed with her in the 90’s..ahem…”

Paul – “I’d choose Metallica, ‘Master Of Puppets’ cover. I could look at this one for days. Also a very iconic album of the 80’s.”

There’s also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What’s your tipple of choice?

Murray – “I’ve recently knocked the booze on the head, so it’d probably be a nice alcohol-free IPA.”

Scott – “As clichéd as it may be – Jack & Coke can’t go wrong.”

Hutch – “I’d choose Asahi Premium Japanese Lager/Beer.”

Paul – “I’m also a non drinker, so Heineken Zero is perfect for me. And Irn Bru! Class!!”

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Murray – “A ‘Monsters’ hoody because they’re big and thick and might help keep me warm if the nights get cold.”

Scott – “If it’s merch from ANY band, it would be the Soundgarden t-shirt I bought at Lollapalooza when I went to Chicago to see them after they got back together. That was special.”

Hutch – “I’d like to say that I’m quite jealous of Scott’s answer..as I would’ve loved to have seen a Soundgarden reunion show…so I’ll choose the Soundgarden Superunknown Tour T-shirt 94/95.”

Paul – “It would have to be my first AC/DC tour shirt I bought back in 1986 when I saw them for the first time. I wore it until it fell apart. Loved that shirt.”

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Murray – “Literally anyone more practical than these overgrown children I’m stuck with! Honestly, I think there’s more chance of Donald Trump saying something meaningful than there is of us surviving this. It’ll be like a cross between Lord of the Flies and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest!”

Scott – “Obviously I’m gonna have to say my partner, Sandra, or she’d probably kill me. If she went down with the ship though, then I guess I’d have to make do with Charlize Theron.”

Hutch – “Ana De Armas….”

Paul – “Anyone but Murray!!!! I’m serious!!”

There’s a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Murray – “I loved my Walkman, I still remember the feeling of those little orange covered headphones and flimsy metal top-section. I’d probably go for Queen – Live Killers. It’s a double-album which helps and it has some of the best performances of their incredible back catalogue from the late 70s.”

Scott – “I’m not a huge fan of live albums if truth be told, but if I had to plump for one, the only thing that really sticks out would be ‘Under A Blood Red Sky’, when U2 were approaching their prime.”

Hutch – “For me it would be Alice in Chains Live, for two reasons..
1: They are the best.
2: There are 4 songs on the album that were recorded at the Glasgow Barrowlands Ballroom in 1993…I was at that show when I was a young boy..so it’d be like re-living my youth.”

Paul – “It would be a fight between, as I said before, If You Want Blood, or, from the same tour, there is a bootleg from the Paradise Theater Boston, 1978. Two amazing performances.”

You’re getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Murray – “Let’s face it, musicians aren’t exactly renowned for their resourcefulness in situations like this are they? I’m going to go for The Rollins Band, big Henry can come over and rescue us with his big muscles.”

Scott – “Well, if it’s a ‘Message In A Bottle’, then it’s really got to be Sting, hasn’t it?”

Hutch – “I would send a message to Fred Durst….not to ask to be rescued..but to ask him to explain himself…what is the point of him…why does he exist…etc..”

Paul – “I’m quite happy here. Send Irn Bru please.”

You’ve been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There’s only one thing for it… which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Murray – “I’m certainly last on the list because I’m so thin I need to run around in the shower to get wet. I’m basically a starter or light snack at best. I’m going to say Paul because his diet consists of chocolate bars, chips and bags of crisps. We call him Steak McCoy. He’d probably taste best.”

Scott – “Paul would probably perish first anyway due to lack of crisps, so it would simply be a waiting game. In the meantime I’ve got Jack & Coke to fall back on, so it’s not all bad.”

Hutch – “My Japanese beer is basically a meal – but Paul would be very tasty I’d imagine. Scott and myself would sip away at our drinks of choice while Murray was working the makeshift spit roast with Paul skewered on it…mmmm beef dripping….”

Paul – “Cheers boys!! Bastards!!!”

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Murray – “David Bowie. If nothing else he’d be incredible to talk to on the island….I have so many questions for him.”

Scott – “I would probably never have picked up a guitar had it not been for Angus Young, so it would have to be him.”

Hutch – “I’d choose Ozzy…because it’d be hilarious..”

Paul – “Forget a musician. I’d save the ships joiner, to build me a boat so these bastards don’t eat me!!”
