Winterburn: The Songs That Influenced Us
Middle Eastern heavy rock titans WINTERBURN have announced the release of their high-octane new single and accompanying music video, The Abyss, arriving worldwide on Friday 6th November. The band have a diverse sound that pulls from many areas. With that in mind, we exclusievly asked the band for five songs that greatly shaped their sound:
Here are five tracks that have had a major impact on the band and their sound:
Black Sabbath – Supernaut
We’re a heavy groove based band and the nucleus to every Winterburn song comprises a riff and drum groove so there’s no better band who’s music defines what we do than Sabbath. This has always been a massive one for us from Tony Iommi’s opening riff, to Ozzy’s soaring vocals and Bill’s killer almost tribal drum break.
Van Halen – Unchained
My all time favourite guitar riff. Eddie is my biggest influences so you’ll always hear little inflections of his playing in our songs and I absolutely love David Lee Roth’s swagger, it’s not contrived you can tell the dude lived every word he sang, I dig that attitude, it’s not corny it’s real street poetry.
Thin Lizzy – Black Rose
The cornerstone of our duel lead harmonies were primarily influenced by two bands, Maiden and Thin Lizzy. I’ve always loved the guitar duos in the latter, whether it was Scott and Robbo or Scott and Gary Moore, they’ve all been massive influences on me. That combined with the coolest frontman in Phil Lynott, a poet and massive inspiration to me as a mixed race kid trying to make it in this industry, as well as one of the most underrated drummers ever (Brian Downey), you’ve got a true supergroup of a band.
Megadeth – Skin O’ My Teeth
We’re a heavy rock band but we definitely pack a metal punch in our music and thrash/speed bands have always been massive for us. This particular song is my all time favourite Megadeth tune, with my favourite Marty solo (I know it’s sacrilege for Tornado fans) but this was the record that resonated with me the most.
ZZ Top – Mr Ten Dollar Man
As a trio, we love other trio powerhouses and these dudes deserve all the accolades and flowers we can give. This particular song with it’s rhythm section (the late greats Dusty Hill and Frank Beard) throwing down a ferocious groove and Reverend Billy with that insane slide work, it’s just pure nastiness of the highest degree. The vocals are blistering too, absolutely love it and it ranks up there as one of their best moments ever.
