DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Next Stop Olympus
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we German modern metal heavy weights Voidemoliton sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Dave: I’d choose Cannibal by Bury Tomorrow. It is a wonderful piece of art with beautiful melodies, heavy riffs and breakdowns and deep lyrics.
Richard: Architects – All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us. This album is emotionally hardwired as a good mood for hard times.
Björn: I think I would choose Macro by Jinjer because I can listen to every one of those songs over and over again.
Dom: I would choose the album Piece of Mind by Iron Maiden. It has crazy good old metal songs. As an Iron Maiden fan this album is one of the best Iron Maiden albums of all times with Somewhere in Time”
Timo: In Waves from Trivium, because it introduced me to the modern site of metal, to guttural vocals and because it has so many outstanding riffs on it.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Dave: That would be the album cover of our upcoming album Sanity. Or graphic designer Heart Taped Designs just did an amazing job.
Richard: As I Lay Dying – Meaning in Tragedy. It’s a cover I love looking at because it has a really good art style and it reminds me of past times.
Björn: I would choose the album Cover Atlas from Parkway Drive; I like the design and that it shows us all in a simple way.
Dom: Definitely one Manowar poster, I love the stylistics of the Band covers and their creator, so it would be the Fighting the World cover, otherwise it would be the Triumph of Steel or the Gods of War artwork.
Timo: I’d definitely pick the cover of our upcoming album Sanity.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Dave: For non-alcoholic it would be lemonade. As an alcoholic drink I’d chose Bahama Mama.
Richard: It would be the drink horse’s neck. Its ginger ale mixed with bourbon.
Björn: Hmm, I think a good Old Single Malt from Islay like Lagavulin. I would die for it.
Dom: Beer. Just Beer, nothing more to say.
Timo: For non-alcoholic I’d pick Mezzo Mix (Cola-Orange mix) and for alcoholic it would be Mojito for me.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Dave: That would be one of my Bury Tomorrow shirts!
Richard: A belt from Annisokay. It’s an everyday piece of clothing for me.
Björn: A long shirt from The Hirscheffekt. I've seen this band live many times, it was always great.
Dom: Definitely my Manowar shirt from their last tour. It is the greatest treasure from my band merch.
Timo: Probably a shirt of our own upcoming merch collection, since a hoodie would be too thick on a desert island.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Dave: Having my bandmates around me would be perfect. Sure, we would annoy each other, especially Timo and I would drive the others into madness. But all in all, we are a very good team and have grown into a little family.
Richard: Bear Grills, maybe. Or Jack Sparrow. He bound turtles together to escape the lone island, maybe.
Björn: Is there a good answer to that? Haha, My band members and i already form a very balanced relationship.
Dom: With the band Iron Maiden.
Timo: My girlfriend, because she is a very calm and lovely person.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Dave: And again… Bury Tomorrow, Summerbreeze Festival 2019. It was overwhelming! I’ve been in the front row and escalated so hard that all of the photographers and journalists would turn around. Then I jumped into the pit and crowd surfed more than ten times. I just love this band!
Richard: It would be the recording of the most emotional and the most immersive live show I was a part of. It was a show of the Band ‘Tell You What Now’ in Essen at 30.11.2019.
Björn: I know that exactly. It would be the Foo Fighters Rock am Ring 2015. The show was really great. My friends and I watched and listened to it that evening. The best thing was the atmosphere; it got darker and darker and then a thunderstorm slowly approached us with all the warnings you can get on a cell phone. We watched it through to the end and then ran straight to our tents.
Dom: It would be Manowar in Dortmund 2019 or Kiss in the Stadium Essen 2019.
Timo: Metallica in San Diego 1992. 180 minutes of pure awesomeness!
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Dave: I’ll send it so Matt Heafy from Trivium. He is such an honourable man with a big reach plus he’s in such good shape. He’ll figure out a way to save us.
Richard: Patrik Putzker from Sheridan.
Björn: I don't know who has the best survival Skills to rescue us.
Dom: Steve Harris should save me. He is just a Legend and very likeable.
Timo: Our singer Dave because he’s a swimming pool attendant and an expert swimmer
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Dave: Out of all of us, Richard is in the best shape and therefor has the highest density of protein within his muscles… It’ll be him 😀
Richard: There are different approaches for this problem. First of all, you have to clarify some questions. Who has the best survivability skills? Who is able to prepare and cook human meat and organs? Who would be the most nourishing? But I would rather die than kill someone.
Björn: I would suggest turning it into a game where the loser gets eaten.
Dom: No one. I would rather eat the whole Island than sacrifice a human.
Timo: Richard because he’s a vegetarian and couldn’t eat his mates. And of course, because he’s bald (I don’t like hair in my food!)
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Dave: That would be Matt Heafy from Trivium. When I started learning how to scream and improve my singing, he was the one I was inspired by the most. He´s so disciplined, it’s very impressive.
Richard: Adam Neely. His influence changed the way I approach making music and listening to music. And it would be the most epic tour ever if one band is Voidemolition and another is Sungazer.
Björn: I think I would have saved my best friend. In all good times as well as in bad moments, he was always completely neutral and objective. He has often broadened my mindset and always stood by my side.
Dom: It would be Dave Lombardo. His Drum recordings with Slayer are just awesome.
Timo: Matt Heafy from Trivium because he is a very inspiring person, an amazing singer and a great guitarist. I think he’s a pretty chill person as well.
Thanks for your time. We hope you get back to dry land before you're next due out on tour!
We thank you for having us! Just send help already!
