DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Amyjo Doh & The Spangles
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Amyjo Doh & The Spangles sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
AmyJo: Well this wouldn’t be the first time the Spangles got (ship) wrecked on tour. I chose Stevie Wonder’s hotter than July because it’s my oldest and longest surviving vinyl I think
Matty: Easy! Let it Bleed by The Rolling Stones. Just the perfect album any way you slice it.
German: Pixies “Surfer Rosa” This album blew my mind and still does. It made me start playing music too. I need to listen to it from time to time to find myself
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
AmyJo: The white album as that would go well with our tans
Matty: Songs of Kris Kristofferson. I guess there won’t be a mirror on the island, so I could just look at that every morning and tell my myself I’m looking good and everything is fine.
German: The Velvet Underground & Nico . I love pop , Andy Warhol and bananas!
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
AmyJo: Ok, fellas….. choose wisely and then can we can swap! I’ll go for Michelada please!
Matty: I don’t even know what that is that AmyJo has chosen there, but someone has to bring the tea bags haven’t they?
German: Any beer will do! But lots of it, so the biggest beer available
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
AmyJo: My Pighounds’ Knickers
Matty: My lucky King Khan & The Shrines truckers cap. My partner will be so disappointed it didn’t go down with the ship - she hates it!
German: The Dj Moderno’s Tote Bag is something that I always need to have with me!
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
AmyJo: NOBODY else of course! Ha ha ha…
Matty: Quantum physics fascinates me but I don’t pretend I understand it. It would be great to have someone like Roger Penrose or Peter Higgs on the island, and all the time in the world to explain it all to me slowly with diagrams in the sand.
German: The Spangles are more than perfect. I could imagine also having some time with Tom Waits.

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
AmyJo: WALKMAN?! I think The first gig I ever saw…. Echobelly and Skunk Anansie c.1994?
Matty: The early Jimi Hendrix gig my mum saw in the mid ‘60s. I’ve always been very jealous about that.
German: Leonard Cohen in Benicassim 2008. I am still in that concert.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
AmyJo: Paul McCartney … he must be one musician who still makes money these days right?
Matty: Sting, obviously.
German: David Byrne gives me hope and humanity. I think he could rescue me somehow.
You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
AmyJo: I’d say me as I’m the meatiest!
Matty: Davíd, I think. The other too are a bit too skinny.
German: If I still have my beer with me I do not need any food. Does that help?
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
AmyJo: God. We need her!
Matty: I’d save Charlie Watts. I don’t think he was a great drummer, but he WAS the drummer in a great band! I think about him and his outlook on life all the time in this band.
German: Lots of them! Depending on which period of my life!! But Robert Smith / David Bowie / Lou Reed / Jim Morrison / Kurt Cobain are for sure on the list of musicians who shaped my life.
Thanks for your time. We hope you get back to dry land before you're next due out on tour!
AmyJo: I’m staying here!
Matty: Cheers! Do you have the wi-fi code for the island please?
German: Let me finish my beer! I stay for a little bit longer
