Who said good things in life don’t come cheap? Whoever it was hadn’t just picked up the new EP from Day of Wrath up from Bandcamp for name your own price. Released on the final day of 2019, the EP ‘MMXIX’ is a solid chunk of modern old school thrash metal from this London band. With four riff filled, chunky and full bodied tracks.

Opener ‘I Drown’ set the tone for the whole EP, the drum and bass attack of Dev and Rust, set the pace and power, and the twin guitars of Pete and Adrian providing the riffs and hooks for nearly a minute until they are all topped off with with Adrian’s vocals pulling the sound together with his slightly raspy growls. Second song up is ‘Sweet Release’ which carries on nicely from the first, keeping this mid pace thrashing going, and even slowing down a little for the vocals to start up again, this track has a more doom edge to it, and some great instrumental sections bridging the song and creating a nice atmospheric track.

Next track ‘Take From Me (Pain)' kicks back up a gear and is an all out thrasher from the first chords, with tinges of hardcore, especially in the breakdown into the shout along chorus of “can you feel my pain” this is moshpit carnage waiting to happen! Finishing the EP with Winter of Discontent, which is probably the most ‘epic’ sounding and least thrash of the tracks, weaving a story across the nearly 7 minutes opus, with haunting guitar melodies, shifts and mood laden vocals.

At 19 minutes long, this doesn’t hang about, but none of the tracks are at breakneck speed, just chugging thrashin’ tunes, with a mix of doom and hardcore influences.

All in all an enjoyable EP, which will definitely get some repeat play as we move from MMXIX into MMXX
