Single Review: Alestorm - Tortuga
Reviewed by Deegan Armitage
Alestorm have recently become a household name in metal with their unique style of pirate infused metal, their last album ‘No Grave But The Sea’ was received with very good reviews and more and more people were beginning to know the band, go to any metal festival and I'm sure you would hear at least one group of people singing ‘Fucked With An Anchor’ at the top of their voices with many more people joining in not long afterwards (remember festivals?).
At the start of 2020 Alestorm announced that they were in Thailand recording their new album ‘Curse of the Crystal Coconut’ and they even had a little visit from Rumahoy’s frontman Captain Yarrface who ended up appearing on their second single Tortuga which released on the 23rd April along side the music video which you can watch below!
This being the second released single from their forthcoming album, it seems that the band have decided to take a bit of a different approach with Tortuga giving them more of Caribbean feel infused with Alestorm’s unique style. The song is also one of the few Alestorm songs where singer Christopher Bowes Raps alongside Rumahoys frontman Captain Yarrface which adds just another layer of excellence to the track, the song also features more hip-hop inspired beats in the chorus which makes for an interesting experience the first time you hear it, this is definitely not the usual Alestorm style you expect.
This is definitely one of my favourite tracks from the album so far, with the overall feel to it being very summery and the kind of song that makes me want to sit outside, grab a nice cold beer and party to some Alestorm and pretend the world isn’t that scary at the moment.
