Album Review: Massive Wagons - House Of Noise
Reviewed by Carl Black
Massive Wagons have been doing it the old fashioned way for a couple of years. They have all the social media and Instagram accounts, of course, they are not dinosaurs! But their natural habitat is playing live. And they’ve been doing a lot of it. If there’s a gig that needs playing, a festival slot that needs filling, or a band that needs supporting, Massive Wagons are the first to put their hand up. It’s done well for them too. With a growing reputation as one of the most exciting live bands from the UK but they need a new album to keep the show running. They can only play 'Ratio' a certain number of times, so Earache Records are all set to release new album 'House of Noise'.
It’s a high tempo trip through English rock 'n' roll with a hint of humour. Just what the country needs right now. This band find it impossible to write verses. The album is one big chorus. There are more hooks on here than at an anglers tea party. Its steeped in Wildhearts/Darkness type song writing and sugar-coated melodies. Take 'Bangin’ on your Stereo', for instance, the song is not even a minute old and the chorus has been belted out twice. Big tunes everywhere on here, 'Freak City', 'Glorious', 'Sad, Sad Song'… I could go on. And don’t forget the old British humour, with lyrics like “you can’t vaccinate against being an asshole” on “Professional Creep, Hallescrewya, pronounced Halle-screw-ya. And the entire 'The Curry Song' (this could do for Massive Wagons what Tequila did for Terrorvision)
Massive Wagons can be enjoyed in a stadium or a sweaty club in equal measure with the rare talent of, that if you see them in a sweaty club, it will feel like a stadium. But if you see them in a stadium, it will feel like a sweaty club. Go and see Massive Wagons in their natural habitat, when this curse of a lockdown is fully lifted.
'House Of Noise' is released on July 17th via Earache Records.
