Album Review: Puro Odio - Puro Odio
Reviewed by Dan Barnes
Hailing from Berneo , Spain, Puro Odio release their self-titled EP digitally for the first time. Having been available as a 7” since 2019, the two tracks on offer are now able to be more widely heard. Straddling the bridge between Hardcore, Punk and Black Metal, Puro Odio lay out a platter of the dirtiest music imaginable. Taking elements of all-three genres and mixing a little of the American-style HC with some British Oi!, crust and d-beat and more than a liberal smattering of the earliest Scandinavian Black Metal, the Spaniards have created five minutes of aural terror.
The feedback at the beginning of No Es Un Juego gives way to crashing cymbal washes and a huge hook powered by pummelling percussion. The bass grinds, the guitar is abrasive and the vocal guttural, evoking the spirit of Hellhammer and Broken Bones.
Pesadilla also begins with a feedback loop but surrenders itself to a far more restrained, almost doom-laden (comparatively speaking) chug. For all its relative restraint Pesadilla is in no way the refined cousin of its predecessor. For it too grinds and hooks and refuses to let go.
Puro Odio’s self-titled is a nihilistic look at the dark side of the human condition, encapsulated into five unforgiving minutes. If you like your music dirty and uncomfortable then you are well advised to check out this pair of ditties.
