DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Häxan.
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we found Welsh rockers Häxan sat on the beach. Whilst we'd not seen them in the flesh for a while, despite being about to release a new album, we assumed this was due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Turn's out they were actually stranded on our island.
How did the band cope with life on Devil's Island? Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Jess: I’m going to go with H.E.A.T’s Tearing Down the Walls. It’s just one of those albums I can listen to over and over and still love it with every spin.
Sam: Are the Spice Girls still cool? Fuck it I’m running with it. The Spice Album is a banger.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Sam: Something by Avril Lavigne, that way I can (supposedly) pretend it's a mirror and rather than me thinking I look a state, shipwrecked on this island, I can think, yeah hair is half tidy at least. Time to face the day.
Jess: Alice Cooper - Trash, it’s just a great album with a great cover. Enough said.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to chose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Jess: Hello spiced rum and ginger beer, goodbye teeth.
Sam: Any beer really. Something dark.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. Whats the merch and for what band?
Sam: Do bands sell soap? Any band that sells soap. Should we sell soap..? Hit us up Carex.
Jess: Motley Crue’s Dr Feelgood tour tshirt from ‘89, it’s just the best looking tour t-shirt going.
You're sat on the island thinking "I'm stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity"... who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Jess: These two slits are enough for me.
Sam: A chef would be nice, but you can’t really beat Juggers and Jebbers.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Sam: The Runaways first ever show in Japan was something pretty crazy. You can barely hear the music over the crowd.
Jess: This is a tough one, either Aerosmith MTV Unplugged from 1990, or their Woodstock show from ‘94.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the one musician most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Sam: Bruce Dickinson has a plane… no brainer.
Jess: Sting.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Sam: I volunteer. Because I’ve eaten so much marmite, I’m pretty sure that I’d have a marmitey flavour, so you’re welcome guys.
Jess: Thanks Sam
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Jess: I don’t think she’s a musician, but Lorraine.
Sam: Robert Plant was the one reason why I wanted to be a musician. And that’s had a pretty big impact on how life panned out, so Robby P.
Sadly there is no room on our boat, so we have to sail away from Devil's Island leaving the band on the beach. As the island slowly shrinks on the horizon we can hear the Spice Girls playing in the distance, but we have to wonder where Harriet was... did Sam and Jess already sacrifice her to survive? We may never know!
