DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Sinoptik
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we found Ukranian rockers Sinoptik sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, but how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Dima: Pink Floyd “Animals”, but then I would also need to grab some barrels of rum, so I could drink myself to death, as I don’t want to listen to it forever!
Ruslan: According to the name of the island I would say that the only album taken should be “Peace Sells... But Who’s Buying?” by Megadeth, but no... Eventually I would choose “Последний герой” (Last Hero) by the Russian band “Кино” (Kino). This album includes some special background for all post-Soviet people.
Aleks: I’d take The Doors - The Doors 1967 album with me. Because I also have a packet of weed and some whiskey. After all, how can you get high and not listen to Jim Morrison?
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Ruslan: Definitely it should be “Metal Up Your Ass” by Metallica because being on the island without any signs of civilization will make me miss a good toilet!
Jokes aside, I would choose Iron Maiden’s “Somewhere in Time” album cover art. Why? Just look at it and you’ll see how many interesting details and riddles it includes. Adorable artwork!
Dima: Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix, because there are no women in our band and with this poster it would be much nicer to think and remember.
Aleks: Most likely I’d chose the cover for the 1976 Boston album. Because one day everything will go to hell, and we can fly away in a spaceship with the island in search of a new home.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to chose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Dima: As I already have Pink Floyd’s album with rum barrels, I choose Pepsi.
Ruslan: Pepsi Cola for sure. The only death I will meet on this island should be sweet and sugar 🙂
Aleks: White Russians, of course. As the dude Jeffrey Lebowski bequeathed from the movie "The Big Lebowski"
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. Whats the merch and for what band?
Ruslan: Iron Maiden’s merch, definitely! This band has the most beautiful and interesting album cover arts!
Aleks: It will be a Guns ’n’ Roses t-shirt. This was the first merch I bought myself. Most likely I would have saved this merch.
Dima: I managed to save Greta Van Fleet’s branded t-shirt and I know I will exchange it later on to the boys for their drinks of choice, as they will be sun burning there.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Aleks: With Pamela Anderson in 1992. It’s the first thing that came to mind! 🙂 And if you seriously think about it, then of course with Angelina Jolie in her role of Lara Croft.
Ruslan: If I could choose people for this I would choose my family for sure. But in this case being on the island with my family wouldn’t be such hard times so we wouldn’t do anything to leave it and stay there forever. So since I was caught on the island with my bandmates it’s the best chance to leave this island in any possible way because we are a good team and we will come up with something.
Dima: I’d rather prefer to be stuck here with the girls from Warpaint band, because I already have Pink Floyd’s album, rum, Pepsi and merch for exchange.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Ruslan: There are 2 live shows that I could listen to for the rest of my life. It’s Metallica’s “Live Shit: Binge & Purge (1989, Seattle)” and Iron Maiden’s “Rock in Rio (2001)”. So since I can choose only one tape I would choose the tape which includes Side A: Metallica’s show, Side B: Maiden’s show 🙂
Dima: 1974’s California Jam by Deep Purple, as the battery will last only for an hour, I won’t get tired of Blackmore’s last guitar solo.
Aleks: This will be a 1992 Freddie Mercury’s Tribute Concert.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Dima: I would send my S.O.S to Eugene from Jinjer, because he always gets and reads my messages.
Ruslan: And I am back to Maiden. Did you watch their “Flight 666” DVD? They have their own plane for touring! Any questions?! 🙂 The message in the bottle will be a request for playing Maiden’s show on this Island and after it they would take us back with them.
Aleks: I would write a message in a bottle to Sting with the words from the song "message in a bottle" making grammatical mistakes and adding some lines and adding that Sting was cooler before. I think he’d want to find this smart guy who decided to joke like that. Therefore, this is a working option!
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Dima: Guys, I’m the only person here who can cook meat properly, so decide without me, please.
Ruslan: Everybody knows Def Leppard, right? And it’s not a secret that their drummer is one-handed. So as a drummer I could sacrifice my hand. But musicians always reach for originality so to differ from Def Leppard I would sacrifice my leg and become a one-legged drummer 🙂
Aleks: If it happens that it would be necessary to sacrifice someone for the sake of survival, then it will be my right hand. Where have you seen a bassist without a right hand? This will be a super band with a one-legged drummer and one-armed bassist.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Ruslan: No jokes, it would be me myself. Yes, during our lifetime we are inspired by some people, learn some lessons from others, but eventually only you yourself decide which way to go and what goal you reach. And no excuses! Thank you.
Dima: It’s Paul McCartney for sure, because he is simply the best.
Aleks: Imagine a situation where I found myself on a desert island with Angelina Jolie... Then I’d tell her "Darling, I think I just saved Sergei Rachmaninoff!"
