Album Review: Yagow - The Mess
Reviewed by Matthew Williams
Imagine gazing through a kaleidoscope and seeing the myriad of different patterns and colours emerging when you rotate the cylindrical tube, not knowing what it going to appear next, well that is how listening to Yagow’s L.P. 'The Mess' will make you feel.
Released on Crazysane Records, the trio from Saarbrucken, Germany, are striking so many brilliant notes with their psychedelic stoner riffs, that it feels like a journey through time, fusing several genres into one with an avant-garde twist.
The vocal style of Jan Werner, throughout the record is hypnotic, reminiscent of the leader of an underground cult, beckoning you to join them on their love themed journey into the sunset. The vibe is warm and embracing with opening song “The Mess” starting with a deliciously eastern sound, before the drums from Marc Schonwald kick in. You will be under their cosmic spell within minutes.
The captivating sound of 'Domed to Fail' is an audible pleasure of psychedelic deliciousness, before the sound gets a bit more of a 70’s feel to it on 'Rise & Shine' without losing any of the cosmic feel to the music.
The general fuzziness of the opening to 'Bloom' is just excellent, slow and enticing, the bass line from Kai Peifer, subtle and understated, as the song meanders like a stream down a mountain, before building up into a crescendo of noise, transporting you away from everyday life.
The final 3 tracks, 'Tres Calaveras', 'Eclectic Electric' and 'Getting Through – is this where the Magic Happens' all add to the hippy, spacey, trippy feel of the record and back up what is a thoroughly enjoyable album to listen to.
So, get ready to light the incense sticks and jump onboard, as this is one journey you will want to get on board with.
