Album Review: Cesspool of Corruption - Requiems Of The Ignominious
Reviewed by Richard Oliver
Requiems Of The Ignominious is the debut full length album from Dallas death metallers Cesspool Of Corruption. The band are a furious four piece who formed in 2012 with the E.P. Eradication Of The Subservient being the only prior release from the band back in 2016. Signed to Gore House Productions, Cesspool Of Corruption are ready to crack craniums with their debut album.
Cesspool Of Corruption follow in the heels of many modern death metal bands in having a sound that balances brutality and technicality in extreme measure. Influences from and similarities to bands such as Suffocation, Deeds Of Flesh, Defeated Sanity and Decrepit Birth can be heard throughout their sound with songs that dazzle with technicality especially in the guitars department whilst simultaneously bringing a metaphorical sledgehammer down to the skull and bludgeoning the listener with bone breaking levels of brutality with slamming riffs and a bulldozing barrage of drums. The band also have a melodic edge especially when it comes to the lead guitar parts with many melodically leaning solos making their way into the songs throughout the album.
Whilst the band are all undoubtedly stunning musicians, they fall into the same trappings that I criticise so many technical death metal bands for in that they can play their arses off but can’t write material that is particularly memorable. It is very flashy and undeniably brutal and heavy but the riffs are generally forgettable. Like a lot of tech-death it feels very much style over substance. It is still enjoyable to listen to and the levels of musicianship are admirable throughout but just don’t expect to remember anything about the album by the end. Requiems Of The Ignominious is an enjoyable debut album but one that doesn’t really stick out and have much relistenable value. Maybe my death metal tastes are just a bit too old school for this band.
