DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Ancient Settlers
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Rene Gonzalez of Ancient Settlers sat on the beach. The island is far from his home, so how did he end up here and how did he cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Well, if it's one album and only that the band will be listening to non-stop, I would choose the "Infinite" from Stratovarius!
It's a great album to develop good mood, and boost morale! Even in the hardest of circumstances, we can all work together with joy and a good mindset to accomplish our goals! Plus! c'mon! Who doesn't like this album? It is awesome! Even Antony likes it lol
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Oh that is an easy one! Ascension Codes by CYNIC, it's an awesome, very beautiful and relaxing album cover... you know, even though we're stranded in this Infernal Island, we need a good quality rest after a day of hard labor, I think that cover would help us clear our minds!
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
There is the troll situation on our stay, but I guess I have to do this! I do not drink alcohol so...
Non-alcoholic beers were the only cargo that was salvaged from the shipwreck, so it's only non-alcoholic drinks from now on... but we have to see it in an optimist point of view, we cannot allow ourselves to be drinking around and getting wasted if we want to get out of this island eventually lol
Oh, the rest are going to hate me for that lol
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Tricky one, but it is better to salvage a valuable item than other things that are not that valuable, who knows if it can be negotiated in the island for some "benefits"?
I would pick my very valuable Mayhem's Live in Leipzig '92 album, I am a proud owner of that album, and, it is in its plastic cover and never been opened! I cannot let that waste in a shipwreck!
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
I would still have preferred to be stuck with my band members, even in a warzone, I love my band members! This is just an enduring experience, if we get out alive of this one; the rest is a piece of carrot cake!
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
This Walkman is for my ears only, right. I guess I’m not sharing as batteries are limited and well... ear pieces are not supposed to be shared, in this case I would have on the A side (assuming it's a cassette device) I would have Hans Zimmer's Live in Prague concert, it's a MARVEL, and on the B side I would have a very nice mixtape of EDM, K-POP, and obviously some metal BOPS!
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Without a doubt I would write a message in a bottle to Sting! I mean, he put one SOS message as well some years ago! In addition, it apparently worked; he is alive, fine, and richer than before the message! Lol
That luck must be transferred to us by proxy! c'mon!
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
With an extremely heavy heart, there is only one member that would be a profit for this sacrifice in order for the rest to survive a decent amount of time... Emmy, I’m sorry, but you're being our meal from now on!
I mean, it's not hard to pick; look at Antony, he's a Finn unseasoned chicken, Carlos must survive, he's a good leader, Miguel was a candidate but he's too small, Herman also needs to survive, there's not enough drummers on earth, and me? No dude I am poison!
Plus, there is way too many guitarists out there! Sorry Emmy, we love you <3
Ok that was hard lol
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
I have saved Jens Johansson! It comes easy! He is an inspiration not only in my music, but also in my life; I love that swede!
He is very wise! And most of all, a MONSTER of music.
Great video just listened to it on my new surround sound system with a 52″ plasma tv. Sound was great along with the picture. Not surprised great band with lots of talent.
