DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Beyond Extinction

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Beyond Extinction

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Beyond Extinction sat on the beach. The island is far from the bands home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Zach: Human by Death. Even though it’s been over 30 years since it came out, it’s still got some of the best death metal songwriting of all time.

Jude: That's a tough one because it's like trying to pick a favourite child... I'd probably say Fat of the Land by The Prodigy.

Niall: I’d grab Are You Experienced by Jimi Hendrix. You can't go wrong with Hendrix. Class musician, class music, class man.

Jasper: Horizons by Parkway Drive. Absolute riff fest, huge breakdowns and arguably the best metalcore album ever. *chefs kiss*

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Jude: I’m a sucker for great artwork so I'd have to say Blood Mountain by Mastodon, as it is intricate and mystical - a good distraction from counting the waves breaking on the shore.

Zach: Gotta be Relentless Mutation by Archspire, that’s probably my favourite piece of album art ever, it’s so gnarly and encapsulates the album’s sound and sci-fi horror subject matter perfectly.

Niall: It's gotta be Elegy by Shadow of Intent. It's sick, but also it highlights something actually important. The imagery hits home and it’s coming with.

Jasper: Dear Desolation by Thy Art Is Murder is an awesome piece of art. Eliran Kantor is a phenomenal artist so it was always going to be one of his works.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Jude: I'm the only one in the band that doesn't drink, so I'd be quite happy with a crisp Apple and Mango J2O for the rest of my washed up, stowaway days.

Zach: The only reasonable choice for a desert island is Corona, no arguments.

Niall: Coffee. No milk, no sugar. I’m a simple man, who plays the drums.

Jasper: Part of me wants to say something fresh and pressed like pineapple juice, the other part wants to say a pint of Moretti. Actually, thinking about it I just want the Moretti, pineapple juice can get stuffed.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Jude: I'd probably have my Deftones Around the Fur hoodie as it's so comfortable and shows how much of a Deftones fanboy I am.

Zach: The tie dye Elysian Grandeval Galériarch shirt from Infant Annihilator, cost me nearly £50 from America so I’m not letting the sharks have that one.

Niall: My purple Viscera hoodie would keep me toasty in that tropical heat. It’s even got a fuckin sleeve print, nuff said.

Jasper: Anything from the beyond extinction merch store obviously, which you can check out at www.beyondextinctionuk.com/merch.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Jude: Rather be stuck with - we'd all rather be stranded on the island with our girlfriends; they already think we spend way too much time together.

Zach: A team of boat construction experts.

Niall: wish I was shipwrecked with Mr Bean. We'd die immediately, but it would be jokes.

Jasper: I’d go for Alan Partridge. Would be funny for ages then the moment he went out of character I’d smash his head in with a rock.

DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Beyond Extinction

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Jude: If there was only one live show, we could watch it would probably be a Slayer concert from the 80s when they were kicking ass.

Zach: It would have to be Necrophagist at Summer Slaughter 2007, anything that can keep the dream of that third album alive.

Niall: Parkway drive at O2 Brixton 2017, supported by stick to your guns and Asking Alexandria. This show got me into metal, and I could relive that drum solo for dayyyys.

Jasper: Any Asking Alexandria show between 2008 and 2012. To relieve that emo-fringed skinny jean awfulness for one day would be bliss.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Jude: We’d probably get Metallica to come and help, seeing as they could finance getting a private helicopter all the way out to pick us up.

Zach: Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden so he can fly Ed Force One down onto the island and save us.

Niall: Myself from the past to never go to the Island, meta move.

Jasper: I’d totally waste the opportunity and write something like ‘I know what you did’ and release it randomly into the sea so when someone finds it they get creeped out.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Jude: It would probably be me, as i’m the biggest and the slowest because of a knee injury, so an easy meal.

Zach: Jude. No explanation necessary and I know it sure as hell won’t be me.

Niall: I’d eat Zach. He’s very easy going so I reckon there’d be no hard feelings. Also he’s bald, so there wouldn’t be too much preparation needed!

Jasper: There’s no way Jude beats me in a chasing scenario. Just saying.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Jude: I'd pick Mick Thomson from Slipknot, as he made me want to start playing guitar, so I'd probably be thanking him for the rest of eternity on that island.

Zach: The most influential musician for me has definitely been Chuck Schuldiner. It changed everything and opened the door to a completely different style of metal than what I was used to, and Death almost single-handedly shaped my music taste into what it is today (for better or for worse).

Niall: Travis Barker, I’ve always respected his work ethic and how he made it big from very humble beginnings.

Jasper: Vocally it’s probably CJ McMahon from Thy Art Is Murder & musically in general I think Winston McCall from Parkway Drive. That band and their members did the grind, cut their teeth and made themselves into metal royalty, all through hard work and perseverance. Mad respect.
