DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Heathen Hearts
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Heathen Hearts sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Lauri: At this moment I would choose Pain Remains by Lorna Shore. That record has so many things that I love in music, heartbreaking melodies, beautiful orchestrations, brutal vocals, blast beats etc. Such a great mixture of everything. Took me by surprise how much I liked that record since I don't like that genre of music in general.
Juhana: There are so many albums that are really important to me but I would choose Runaljod Yggdrasil by Wardruna. Works of Einar Selvik just pierce through my whole being. No other words to describe it. So I think if I’d have to listen to one album for a very long time while on the island it would be that.
Jere: First Iron Maiden album. It is, and has been a very important album throughout my life.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Lauri: Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I think it's my favourite album cover ever. I even have it tattooed on me.
Juhana: Cruelty and the beast by Cradle of Filth. Good looking woman bathing in a bathtub full of blood. Bit of a sexy vampire twist to it. Need I say more? At least there would be some eye candy every time I wake up from that shitty shack. Haha!
Jere: Though one. Again Iron Maiden, but Seventh Son of a Seventh son.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Lauri: Some ice cold lager would be lovely to have every now and then.
Juhana: I think a very good non-alcoholic beer would be my choice. There are some of those, believe me. If the stay would be very long I would probably regret choosing a non-alcoholic version.
Jere: White Russian, as a double.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Lauri: Misfits t-shirt for sure, has been my fav merch item for years.
Juhana: Either a Wardruna hoodie or Enslaved t-shirt. Whichever I managed to grab first.
Jere: Finnish death metal band “Kasvoton” long sleeve shirt. My favourite band merch atm.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Lauri: The love of my life. I have no clue who she is so at least I would find that out, lol.
Juhana: My girlfriend. Then I wouldn’t need that poster in the shack. Haha!
Jere: As Juhana said.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Lauri: Hmm probably Queen + Adam Lambert in Kaisaniemi, Helsinki 2016. It was so cool to be 5 metres away from Brian May, one of my guitar heroes. Such a great show that was.
Juhana: It could be the Wardruna concert from 2022 in Savonlinna Castle, Finland but since I already have a Wardruna album with me then maybe the Heilung concert from 2022 in Midgardsblot , Norway or the first time I saw Kvelertak in 2010 in Underworld, London or Nightwish show in Hartwall arena, Helsinki, Finland in 2005 with Tarja Turunen last time as their vocalist. One of those.
Jere: Not one that I’ve seen, but my choice would be Slipknot live in london arena 2002. Pure aggression and violence from start to finish.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Juhana: Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. He can fly a plane and get us off the island. 🙂
Lauri: My answer is the same as Juhanas. Bruce Dickinson rescuing us with Ed Force One. Would love that.
Jere: As above.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Juhana: Lauri is the biggest guy with the most meat. So he is the rational choice. Sorry Lauri. 🙂
Lauri: Yeeah, probably I would be the one to sacrifice to feed the most. Hah.
Jere: Yeah, apologies Lauri, obvious choice if we wanna survive. And thumbs up for Lauri for the humble action of sacrificing himself. True friend we have here.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Lauri: Sir Brian May, if I look back at my previous answers. He seems like such a great person in and out of music. Otherwise it could be Alexi Laiho, may he rest in peace.
Juhana: Based on my previous answers this is quite obvious. Einar Selvik.
Jere: Alexi Laiho. Just because as a teenager, he was the one I really looked up to, didn’t have patience to practise that much though but still he made me wanna push myself and push my band’s at the time. And that spirit is still there.
