DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Broken Jaw

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Broken Jaw

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Broken Jaw sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

JV: This is a hard question. Just one album....eeeerrrrmmm. I think I would go for “King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime” by Faith No More. I’d choose it because it's so diverse. Its got heavy songs, punky songs, and ballad type songs. I have never gotten bored of thus album and Mike Patton is a god!

Nutzie: Audioslave – Audioslave. Could you imagine sitting there in a Lost (TV show) kind of environment, with that as your soundtrack?

Sean: Filosofem by Burzum it always makes me feel calm & comforted

Josh: Starting out with the tough question huh? God! I’m a huge Huge fan of Killswitch Engage! So I’d have to pick Alive Or Just Breathing! A close second would be As Daylight Dies but I have such a soft spot for anything that came out in the 2000’s, and its raw production just makes my knees shake!

Sam: Bleed From Within - UprisingThe first album I heard from these guys, everything about them I find inspirational, Craig & Steven are riff machines, if I were to be a drummer Ali would be my inspiration, same can be said about Scott’s vocal and David’s Bass playing, they do a lot of the stuff themselves like band art and they’d just a bunch of absolute legends.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

JV: “State Of The World Address” by Biohazard. It was the first album I bought pure because I thought the cover was cool. I was probably about 15 and saw the cd in my local music shop. It caught my attention because of the transparent orange jewel case. I ended up loving Biohazard and they’re one of the big reasons I wanted to be in a band.

Nutzie: I’d have to have Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes – The End Of Suffering, to help remind me of being back home with my partner and my cat. Use it to help to drive me and to help me stay positive and proactive in getting back there.

Sean: Summoning’s 2nd album Minas Morgul, it’s a very charming looking fortress looking over gondor in LOTR lore

Josh: Acranius-When Mutation Becomes Homicidal. Come on…. It’s a mutant bear… thing…. Ripping some poor souls apart in some frozen wasteland! If I can’t look at mutant bear mutilation every 5 minutes then I just don’t think I could survive living on a desert island.

Sam: Sylosis – Conclusion Of An AgeI’ve always loved the details in the album art and getting it on vinyl and having it on display where you can really see all of it instead of a thumbnail on Spotify it really stands out.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

JV: If non alcoholic I’d have to go for coffee. But, alcoholic would be rum and coke.

Nutzie: I’d have to have Crystal Head Vodka and Lemonade! If non-alcoholic though, Fanta Fruit Twist as that stuff is tasty!!!

Josh: Banana Milkshake because I’ll be DAMNED if I can’t pretend I’m a 5 year old drinking my milkshakes!

Sean: Some kind of moonshine or absinthe hopefully I’ll pass out & forget everything

Sam: Jolters Press Apple Cider. Just locally press cider very sweet and goes down a treat

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

JV: I am addicted to band tees. So, it would definitely be a t shirt. My fave at the moment is an Archspire one I got when I saw them in Bristol. It shows the Terminator removing the bands heads.

Nutzie: A lot of bands (especially alt bands) seem to have dildos, I mean, you could use the hefty Rammstein of Mötorhead one to try and kill some prey I guess? I remember Weezer having a snood type sleeping bag one though, so think I’d choose that *laughs*

Sean: Marduk shirt from the first EP cuz it has boobs on it

Josh: I want that Kiss casket! I would rather chop my ears off than listen to Kiss BUT I bet that you could use that as a boat? Sail away to safety haha!..... chances are I can’t carry that in my suitcase so maybe a fun Cannibal Corpse shirt for shock value

Sam: So not so much of a band but my Bloodstock 2021 long sleeve and to me it means a lot as it’s the first shirt with our name on not printed by us *laughs* even if our name may be in the small writing at the bottom to be on the same shirt as Many other incredible bands to be worn by thousands as well it’s a small achievement.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

JV: Shotzi Blackheart and Rhea Ripley the WWE wrestlers. Would never get bored of the view.

Nutzie: Other than my partner and cat, someone like Bear Grills who’s gonna help us survive this shit! *Laughs*

Sean: Goku cuz he would teleport me home.

Josh: More people? Really??? Well if I’m just with my band mates then I would want someone who isn’t solely a musician. Because musicians just wanna talk about music and I would launch myself from a palm tree into the sea if I had to talk about the same thing all the time. Me and my partner are quite into drag so maybe Ru Paul Charles? I’m sure he could make me a nice desert dress and decorate my makeshift cabin and slag me off at the same time! Or maybe my partner. I should have said that shouldn’t I? I change my answer. I don’t wanna get in trouble…

Sam: My partner Conor, apart from the band she’s the only person I really talk to *laughs*

DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Broken Jaw

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Sean: What’s a walkman?

JV: Probably Every Time I Dies set at Slamdunk Leeds 2012. Its probably the most chaotic and fun gig I have ever been to. It was just wild start to finish and I ended up onstage for the last song. To be fair every time I saw them was absolute chaos. Gutted they broke up.

Nutzie: Machine Head, playing at Nottinghams Rock City in 2001, my first metal gig! It was mental, so much so, a massive dude literally picked me up like a ragdoll and threw me over the crowds heads right to the front where I hit the barrier and proceeded to rock out like crazy! My friend got winded by the same dude and had to sit most of it out! To hear that show again would be ace!

Josh: Wow, another hard one! I have Suicide Silence with Mitch Luker live on a CD so maybe that one! I’m a huge fan of them too and Mitch (RIP) had such amazing energy! It would give me the motivation to get up through our survival horror experience!

Sam: Rammstein – Völkerball Live in Nîmes,If i’m in a sad or happy mood, völkerball will glue me to the screen for the entirety.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Sean: Alvin & The Chipmunks, so that they can provide free nuts.

Sam: Sting from The Police, as hear he’s good with messages in bottles.

JV: Although I’m not much of a fan of the band it would have to be Johan Hegg of Amon Amarth. Those boys got boats!

Josh: The most obvious answer is of course Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. The man can fly his own jet and I bet he’s super nice! I’m sure he’d fly over and rescue us…. Me just me leave the rest of them.

Nutzie: I mean, John’s and Josh’s are both great choices but think I trust Mr Dave Grohl to rally the troops more and for him to put something into action in order to save us. As he’s a very resourceful and a very caring guy. Just look at all of the charity work he’s done in the past.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

JV: Besides me, Nutzie probably has the most meat on him. So, would be more to go around. But, Sam eats like a horse. So, maybe him so we can all get a fair share.

Sean: Me

Sam: Sean probably tastes good, nutzie but he’s consumed ALOT of fireball in his time so he might just be a bit too cinnamony.

Nutzie: I mean, I think we’d all offer ourselves up before eating anyone else but it’d have to be someone who’s not contributing or helping us to survive for me and so in that case, they’d be putting themselves up for it in affect! So democracy *laughs*

Josh: Sean our drummer…. He has a Tasmanian Devil worth of energy. I feel like if we eat him that’ll transfer into us and we can work on getting off the island!

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

JV: Has to be Billy Graziadei of Biohazard. Ever since I was a teen I just thought he was cool as fuck. His energy and stage presence made me want to be in a band and he has had the biggest influence on how I perform.

Nutzie: I have too many but the one who I’d think would be the best to have and the most resourceful and encouraging would have to be Mr Henry Rollins! That dude is a survivor and loves a challenge!

Josh: I’m a bass player… we don’t have many influential idols…. And my personal most influential bass player is Ryan Martinie from Soften The Glare but most notably Mudvayne. So of course I would save him so he could record more songs so I could feel bad about how I’m not good at my own instrument.

Sean: Hatsune Miku

Sam: Joe Kelly – Ex Welcome back delta, currently UpShot.Joe is just full of inspiration, motivating me to join Broken Jaw and pushing me to do my first live performance on stage. He’s just full of happiness.
