EP Review: Cryptosis - The Silent Call

‘The Silent Call’ EP is the latest release of Dutch trio Cryptosis, after their debut album ‘Bionic Swarm’ in 2021, although previous to that, the same trio released two albums and a split release under the moniker Distillator, which is when they reinvented themselves from a meat and potato thrash act to a more progressive, forward-looking outfit.

The EP consists of two unreleased tracks, the title-track is a brand-new track, while 'Master of Life' is a previously unreleased track from the debut album’s recording sessions. Rounding out the track list are two live versions of the songs 'Prospect of Immortality' and 'Transcendence'.

The title-track sees the band moving forward musically, with super technical riffs and the use of orchestrated parts to fill out the soundscape. It is a leap forward in terms of progression from the debut, and hopefully marks the next step for the band. 'Master of Life' is a great track, and one wonders how it was left off the album, it also serves to show the advances in the band’s songwriting, when comparing it to the title-track. The live songs pack a real punch, with the band in good form and both are delivered with precision and energy.

This is a nice little taster EP, for hopefully a new album in 2024, a must for fans and a good introduction for those who have yet to discover the Dutch trio.
