DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Aniimalia

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Aniimalia

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Aniimalia sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Kira: Fever by Against The Current. This is more of an EP, but gave me a huge boost of adrenaline when it was released that I really needed at the time. It always inspires me to get up and play with the band and is my ideal kind of music to listen to.

Kieran: Appetite For Destruction by Guns n Roses was the first album that inspired me to want to be in a band.

Max: Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd… Should this really need an explanation?

Ben: It’s got to be Californiacation by RHCP right? Can’t skip a track on the record and amazing vibes.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Kira: There are so many I love for different reasons but RIOT! By Paramore always catches my attention on a playlist.

Kieran: Mister Asylum by Highly Suspect reminds me of when I first discovered them and since then I’ve been obsessed with the band.

Max: For Emma, Forever ago by Bon Iver seems to suit the shack vibe with the story of this album.

Ben: Atonement by Killswitch Engage as I’m a huge fan of the artist Richey Beckett!

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Kira: It has never ended well getting drunk with these three. I’m not a huge drinker anyway so my options are pretty boring - I could literally just live off water for my entire life if I had to. If it was ONLY a bar though, anything mixed with vodka does the trick.

Kieran: Whiskey Sours for sure.

Max: Henry Westons Vintage cider. I’m going to need to get very drunk very quickly.

Ben: Some type of glittery fruity gin…

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Kira: I have an oversized Fall Out Boy jumper from when I went to my first concert at 14 - or I hope I still have it, I haven’t seen it in in a while - it’s huge on me so will keep me warm and is a reminder of a sick show.

Kieran: My sleeveless Slaves (softplay now) T-shirt that I made into a tank top. I saw them in Weston-Super-Mare and it was the most chaotic gig I’ve been to.

Max: My (girlfriend’s) oversized sleep token hoodie, don’t tell her I took it…

Ben: I don’t actually wear merch but my Marshall long sleeve would come in handy.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Kira: If it wasn’t friends and family, I feel like Grandson would have some really interesting conversations. I love talking life and philosophy and deep thoughts so would need someone who wouldn’t get sick of it.

Kieran: The cast of The Walking Dead seem to have known how to rebuild humanity for a while.

Max: My family or my other groups of close friends, but in terms of celebrities then the infamous trio of Four Tet, Fred Again.. and Skrillex.

Ben: Paul Rudd.

DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Aniimalia

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Kira: Against The Current, Bristol 2022 - favourite album, favourite band, seems fitting. They honestly never fail to deliver and leave me in awe every time. Chrissy is a relentless frontwoman!

Kieran: I once watched Slash in the Hollywood Palladium when I visited LA - was a bucket list moment for sure. Insane show.

Max: I’m gonna go against bands this time and go with Deadmau5 at Glastonbury 2015 - got to mix up the genres!

Ben: The drum solo by Aaron Spears at MD festival 2006 was pivotal in my early music career.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Kira: The HARA seem up for a challenge. Message one of them, I bet all three would come swimming through the ocean with way too much energy.

Kieran: I hear Led Zeppelin have a private jet…

Max: Nile Rodgers, I hear he has homes and resources around the globe.

Ben: Can I ask Robbie Williams to swing by in his yacht and pyjamas?

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Kira: Probably me. I think my talking would drive someone to bludgeoning me over the head long before we got desperate.

Kieran: I mean if Kira is offering then..

Max: I agree with Kira (sorry Kira).

Ben: I want to also say Kira, but Kieran and his muscles could feed a village.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Kira: There’s been a couple of female musicians in particular that have really shaped my voice and career. I think Lacey Sturm from Flyleaf really helped me develop a natural edge to my voice when I was younger and rethink how I write lyrics even now.

Kieran: Mike Kerr of Royal Blood, really changed the way I saw playing guitar and writing songs for the better.

Max: Ben Ottewell of Gomez. That band has been with me since birth, and I’ve been lucky to see the band and meet Ben a few times now.

Ben: Rou Reynolds of Enter Shikari. Such a humble person and has been a huge figure in my beliefs and attitudes.
