EP Review: Spitgod - Through Life 'till Death
Reviewed by Matthew Williams
The deep, almost harsh piano notes lead the introduction into 'Unwillingly Brought Into This World', all spooky and eerie, the spoken word takes over and it has such a sinister undertone to it, then the clap of thunder makes you feel a little bit cold. It’s all just a prelude to the rip snorting guitar sound and deathly growl that greets you on “March of the Dead” which comes at you like a speeding train, so brace yourself for the impact.
The Portuguese duo of Telmo Cruz (Vocals, Guitar, Bass) and Beatriz Cruz (Drums, Backing Vocals) are bringing their brand of blackened thrash/death/pink style in the name of SpitGod, and their new EP called “Through Life `till Death” is one that will excite fans of such bands like Venom, Benediction and Celtic Frost.
'Nothing But the Will' has a really dark and evil feel across the entire song, with the pace of the music coming through loud and clear, you can sense the venom being spouted through the lyrics. The band say that the new music “is a result of joint effort of deep personal immersions and exploration” and with six songs covering eighteen minutes they have nailed their colours to the mast, as speed is king!
'Embrace Yourself' is quite an apt title for the next song, as the fret tapping intro doesn’t prepare you for the onslaught that’s about the commence. I love the vocal style from Telmo, and it is complimented really well by Beatriz backing it up, and this song showcases that immensely well. It’s another song that has allowed them “to intensely explore certain aspects without external interference” and put that into music.
The explosion that greets you at the start of 'You Know It’s Coming' is hellishly evil and begins an almost feeding frenzy approach to the music, as it is a non stop assault on your senses. Addressing more social issues and interpersonal relationships, the duo are direct and straight forward, and final track 'Vile Evils' personifies this approach better than most songs. Its over four and half minutes of pure adrenalin fuelled blackened thrash metal and sets the tone for what is set to come next for the band.
