Album Review: Morbific - Bloom of the Abnormal Flesh

Finnish Death Metal trio Morbific have in five years established themselves within the International Death Metal circuit because of the bands brand of knuckle dragging and crushing filth. They are back with their third full length album Bloom of the Abnormal Flesh, a eleven track voyage into the swirling sewer that is Morbific’s old school sound which is covered in one of the more glorious pieces of artwork you will see this year.

Bloom of the Abnormal Flesh is a frankly quite putrid slab of music. Now it's not putrid in the modern sense when it comes to describing death metal, it's not a blast beat ridden release with vocals like a clogged toilet. It is more in its attempts to recreate the sound of the style in its earlier form, its more traditional blueprint. It's built on a crushing guitar sound, and pounding hard drumming which relies on brute force more than speed and a low dominant vocal approach in order to craft the album's tracks.

This record also has a layer of filth of the overall production which fits the style of this record absolutely perfectly. It's not clean, it's not particularly clear and it really brings the power and atmosphere to the front of the record. Where I do feel that Bloom of the Abnormal Flesh does not really hit, is that it's very similar track by track, and I feel that there is a severe lack of any even subtle differences as the album progresses. I feel that this does cause it to drag at points especially considering we have a total of 11 tracks on this record. This is a big shame as individually each track is solid and has lots of really cool features but I don't feel that this lends itself to working as a full length.

Its highs are high but I feel at points where the high wears off this record fails to keep my full attention. I can see these tracks being absolutely brilliant in a live setting but as a full length record it was not really for me.
