Album Review: Vulvectomy - Aberrant Vaginal Gestation
Reviewed by Daniel Phipps
It's been twelve years since the Italian slamming brutal death metal giants Vulvectomy last released any form of new material. Teasing the release for UK fans at last year's Offal Fest by playing a number of new tracks for a rabid audience it put Aberrant Vaginal Gestation right on my radar.
One of the biggest changes for Vulvectomy at this point is the inclusion of a real drummer which is handled by Marco Coghe who also is a member of Devangelic alongside guitar player Mario Di Giambattista so the chemistry was already in place and it definitely gives a new dimension to Vulvectomy even though if I am being honest I did enjoy the drum machine on the band's earlier releases. Aberrant Vaginal Gestation does follow a very similar path to Vulvectomys discography; it's full of churning and groovy slam riffs mixed with putrid guttural vocals, however I do feel like the human element on the drums gives it that extra touch to help the record flow much better.

As mentioned before I do enjoy the raw programmed drum sound of the band's past albums but I will concede that the human element can never be fully replicated via a program and this really shows that. I also find this record to be slightly more well rounded than the earlier records and a damn sight more than a lot of “slam” records nowadays which becomes a more unfunny joke each year. You are treated by layers of big nasty grooves, flares of adrenaline pumping blasting all topped off with hideous vocals, it's not intelligent but at the same time it's not dumb it just showcases that this style of death metal can still be executed at a top level.
It's big and nasty, it won't be for everyone and if you are all about flashy over produced tripe I'd skip this one wildly. However if you want solid groove, and power which will absolutely flaw you then yeah this one will be right up your street.
