DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Costal Fire Dept.
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we Gurnsey alt-rockers writer Costal Fire Dept. sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Ollie: Diiv’s ‘Deceiver’ album is strong from beginning to end. I’d have to have an album with no filler!
Ozzy: Led Zeppelin: One cause it is the best album I have ever heard and it has John Bonham playing drums on it.
Saad: Eddie Vedder, Into The Wild - It's a chilled album and relevant for the situation of being stuck and isolated on an island.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Ollie: I was going to say Ride’s ‘Nowhere’ but as we are by the sea I’m going for My Bloody Valentine’s ‘Loveless’.
Ozzy: I'm not really into posters would rather have a old Baywatch poster on the wall to look at
Saad: Sterophonics - Keep Calm And Carry On - This would remind me to stay positive and not give up
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Ollie: Ozzy’s gonna go for Tequila! I’ll have to go for cider. But not to fizzy so I can drink it all day.
Ozzy: Tequila of course! Gets the party started
Saad: Would have to be Guinness! I couldn't live without this.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Ollie: Well I do love a hoodie! So it would have to be a hoodie maybe a Violent Soho hoodie.
Ozzy: Coastal Fire Dept. badges! Because, Ollie promised my kids some and he has not given them and they keep going on about it. If I ever get off this island, I would give it to them.
Saad: My nirvana smiley face T Shirt i would have to say, it's a cool shirt.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Ollie: Somebody clever, fun, artistic and hopefully a little good looking…mmmmm…Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron or Sophia Allison (Soccer Mommy) she is immensely talented and humble think she’d be great company.
Ozzy: All the lads from the Arc Royal. I reckon between them all we could fashion a raft and sail off on holiday in the Caribbean because they would know the way.
Saad: Karl Pilkington - His dry sense of humour would make me laugh.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Ollie: It had to be Nirvana’s ‘Live at Reading’ that is a band at the top of their game and is pure perfection.
Ozzy: Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street band. Because they play really long shows.
Saad: Alice and Chains MTV Unplugged. It's a timeless performance.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Ollie: It would have to be Bono. I’m not a fan of his but he always likes to get behind a cause!
Ozzy: Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden because he has a plane
Saad: Elton Jon, i figure he would have a large contact list and the money to hire a rescue plane.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Ollie: Oh man! I’m a picky eater and don’t think I could eat any of them!
Ozzy: To be honest, I rather start fishing
Saad: That's a difficult question, I think whichever band member drew the shortest straw would need to be sacrificed then it's fair.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Ollie: There’s no one musician that I rate that much! Maybe someone like Evan Dando because his songwriting is off the scale amazing! He keeps it all simple and effective. He comes across as being really chilled and good company too!
Ozzy: I would have liked to have saved Keith Moon but unfortunately he is already dead. But maybe he could still float a bit so I would grab hold of him and use him as a float to get me to the shore.
Saad: There would be too many, although it would be Jerry Cantrell. He's a supertaliented guitarist and songwriter and Grunge wouldn't be the same without Alice and Chains.
