DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Gutlocker
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Gutlocker sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Pete: Jeff Wayne's Musical Versions of the War of the Worlds. Used to terrify me as a child, but it's an absolute masterpiece. It inspired the artwork on our EP Cry Havoc, and also a classic story that put Woking on the map. Far superior to the Spielberg version.
Dean: Master of Puppets for me as it's just a belter from start to finish without a single song I would get bored listening to. Plus it was actually the first album I ever bought and my first time hearing Metallica.
Ben: Origin of Symmetry by Muse, for me it’s a perfect album cover to cover, it takes you on a journey through different sub genres and really sounds like the band finding themselves.
Craig: It'll have to be "Angel Dust" by Faith No More. Its a timeless classic. This album really cemented how much of an incredible vocalist Mike Patton is. This album is not pigeon holed to one genre and its an album that'll I'll never get tired of hearing.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Pete: Leviathan by Mastodon. Another one of my favourites, love the album cover and the stuff in the booklet too.
Dean: Anything by Iron Maiden. Hallowed be thy name was the very first metal track I ever heard and I was blown away by their artwork instantly. I couldn't even choose a favourite as they all rock.
Ben: Karnivool - Sound Awake, just a beautiful cover that would look great on a poster.
Craig: It'll have to be Dirt by Alice In Chains. I'm guessing this island will have sand, so this piece of decor will really tie it together nicely.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Pete: Water. You try surviving while stranded on a desert island on nothing but pints of beers!
Dean: Vodka and Redbull for me all the way. Started drinking it in pints in my youth and haven't stopped since.
Ben: Gotta go for a single malt, something like Glenfiddich.
Craig: It'll be tequila. Because it makes me happy. No doubt I'll be buckled 24/7 but I'm OK with that.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Pete: I'm fond of my Pelican shirt, please don't rip it.
Dean: My favourite band merch is definitely my Fear Factory tshirt. Great art, still fits and always sparks a conversation.
Ben: Definitely my Royal Blood Boilermaker T shirt, it’s quite a recent print yet I’ve still not found anyone else who owns one.
Craig: It'll be my "King For A Day" t shirt by Faith No More. Because I love this band incase you didn't know.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Pete: I'd pick somebody that has far more experience at this sort of thing. Possibly Ray Mears, or Tom Hanks. However, I wouldn't trust any drinks that Bear Grylls would hand me.
Dean: Jimmy Carr. He creases me up and he's food at keeping money in offshore accounts... maybe even our island? Start digging Jimmy.
Ben: I like the idea of bringing my friends and girlfriend along for the ride, the band can stay we’ll call it party island
Craig: WILSOOOOONNNN!
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Pete: The first gig I ever went to was Rammstein at the Brixton Academy back in 2005, blew my mind and scorched my eyebrows clean off.
Dean: For me, Ugly Kid Joe at The Concorde 2 in Brighton a few years back now. A small, intimate venue and they were the soundtrack to my teenage years. I'm old now and didn't think I'd ever get to see the... but I did.
Ben: Will have to go Muse again with their Download 2015 set, Full of their heaviest songs and deep cuts, I could watch them play that set forever!
Craig: It'll have to be Tool. I saw them on 9th May at The Apollo this year. Words cannot describe how incredible it was. A memory that lives rent free in my head.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Pete: Most likely Bruce Dickinson, he can fly over in a jumbo jet and pick us up just in time for the next Iron Maiden gig.
Dean: Igor Cavelera. That dude has more tribal in him than a bongo. We'd bring down some trees with rhythmic flare, build a raft of drums and head out to sea on our kick ass double bass pedlo.
Ben: I’ve heard Brian May has a helicopter, probably go for him for that reason and I think he could organise a pretty good rescue.
Craig: It'll be Sting from The Police. He's been in this situation before. He will know what to do.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Pete: Ben because he'd be the easiest one to trap, or the likeliest one to be passed out somewhere.
Dean: I'd have to say Ben, as he drinks so much beer that you know that meat will be tender for days.
Ben: Dean’s been gymming it pretty hard recently, I think he’d taste decent because of that and would produce some good cuts of meat.
Craig: I'd watch Ben and Dean wear each other out. Then when the opportunity arises, I go in for the kill. More for me!
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Pete: Liam Howlett. As a kid I recall seeing the music video to Firestarter on tv, I'd never seen or heard anything quite like it before. While it's not necessarily what got me into metal, it was my gateway to having a big interest in music, so I'll always give props to the Prodigy.
Dean: Dave Lombardo was my first and still is my absolute drum idol. The first time heard the album South of Heaven, it blew me away. The drums were just insane. The quickest I'd heard at the time and yet still so musical with his tom work. Pure genius. Plus, that guy would have so many amazing tour stories from back in the 80s.
Ben: Andrew Groves of Arcane Roots, his songs are what I want my music to sound like, the perfect blend of synthesiser and traditional band instruments just blows me away every time, I’ve had many influences growing up and shaping me but they just completely stopped me in an epiphany moment, oh shit this is exactly what I want to be doing, it may not be completely obvious in Gutlocker’s music but they really made me change the way I was thinking about everything to do with being in a band. That man’s talent on stage to be able to switch instruments at the drop of the hat all while delivering a perfect vocal performance is something I really aspire too! Hopefully they’ll be able to get back together one day and perform again!
Craig: It would be Jaz from Killing Joke. He is in 60s and still kicking arse. He has helped me gain perspective that age is just a number and that I'm far from bring done with my music endeavours.
