DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring She Must Burn
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Jack Higgs of She Must Burn sat on the beach. The island is far from the bands home, so how did he end up here and how did he cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Keep Of Kalessin’s 'Armada', I can’t get bored of this album, it was one of my favourite albums growing up and it’s influenced more than you can possibly know & still stands the test of time. The riffs are extremely frantic & make you want to pull a ridiculous faces & quit guitar simultaneously, vengeance rising in particular.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
If it was any form of spirit, I wouldn’t get anything done and beers not really my thing all the time so a nice bottle of malbec would be my choice if I couldn’t have anything else.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Probably a long sleeve from my vast collection hahaha, gotta make sure I'm not a complete crisp of a human being by the end of it.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Chuck Noland, Jack Sparrow & Bear Grylls maybe? I think they’re a safe bet in this situation hahaha.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
That’s such a difficult question! I absolutely love Leo Sypniewski’s videos from the Foundry Club, every one he does sounds phenomenal. If I was going for an older show though, definitely Pantera live in Moscow, the vibe and the live sound of that show is absolutely sublime for its time.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Definitely Joel Rawlins from A Night In The Abyss, he has no body hair allegedly so I think he’d be hydrodynamic like a bottlenose dolphin cum manta ray
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
I’d have to go with Kyle. The rest of us all look a bit too sinewy & Steve needs all his limbs to pull off the drums if we ever get rescued.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Although I’m not really inspired by his music that much anymore, he was instrumental in getting everyone into metal and is the godfather of it so I’d have to say Ozzy. He has one of the most characteristic voices & personas ever, birthed an entire genre that hasn’t gone away in decades & continuously released music & toured since being a teenager. If I live half as rich a life or release anywhere as much music I will be a lucky man. But yeah him or Seregor from Carach Angren, purely for the lyrical story telling & musical inspiration that’s been so present in my writing.
