Bloodstock Bound: Voidwalker
As Bloodstock gets closer, we delve deep into the line up to find out more about some of the bands playing the New Blood and Jägermeister stages at this years event.
Today we chat with Voidwalker!
The Razor's Edge: Please introduce yourself and your band mates.
Voidwalker: Hi, I’m Calum and I’m the drummer in Voidwalker. We also have Robyn and Amaia on guitars, Miguel on vocals and Joe on bass and vocals.
The Razor's Edge: How would you describe your style of metal?
Voidwalker: I’d probably call it Progressive Deathcore, but we get described as Tech Death quite often. We’ve got a pretty broad range of influences so pull from all kinds of sub-genres and like to play with progressive concepts and odd time signatures in places, and most of our songs have irregular structures but with 8 string guitars tuned super low and very death metal vocals.
The Razor's Edge: How did you land your spot on the Bloodstock bill?
Voidwalker: We won this year’s Metal 2 The Masses in Leicester, with the final taking place at Uprising festival.
The Razor's Edge: How tough was the competition this year?
Voidwalker: Super tough! Every band we played with this year at each stage was really strong, so we had doubts about getting through on the night every time, and will definitely try to play with several of them again.
The Razor's Edge: What does playing at Bloodstock mean to you?
Voidwalker: It’s unreal. If you’d told me 10-15 years ago that I’d be playing the same festival on the same day as In Flames, who were probably my favourite metal band growing up and still a pretty big influence on the way I write and play, I can’t imagine how I’d have responded (but I definitely wouldn’t have believed you). It’s going to be a really special show for us, real bucket list stuff. I know Joe in particular has been to Bloodstock every year that it’s been on since long before I knew him too, so especially cool for him.
The Razor's Edge: For people who’ve never seen you live, what can they expect at Bloodstock?
Voidwalker:A bit of a variety in our set - we’ve got some techy bits, some really heavy bits, some bouncy parts, a couple of calmer clean melodic sections, quite a few tapping sections, a couple of blast-beat bits, I guess even occasionally parts that are more on the hardcore side too. We’re hoping to see a fair few pits as well, and Miguel usually gets the crowd headbanging over a polymeter section towards the end of our set too.
The Razor's Edge: What day are you performing?
Voidwalker: Friday (don’t know what time yet though)
The Razor's Edge: What other bands are you looking forward to watching at Bloodstock this year?
Voidwalker: I really want to see Fit For An Autopsy, so desperately hoping we don’t clash with them haha! In Flames are again the other big one for me, and Meshuggah are a favourite within the band too. I’m also looking forward to seeing some of the other New Blood bands - we’ve played with a fair few now from previous years (both as part of and outside of M2TM) and have been super impressed, so looking forward to see who else the competition has uncovered.
The Razor's Edge: Playing the New Blood Stage is just the first stepping stone in a bands journey. What’s next in your plans for world domination?
Voidwalker:We’re hard at work on our second EP at the moment (our first EP plus a single from last year are available on Bandcamp, Spotify, etc.) - drums are recorded and just getting everything else nailed down, so that’s our big priority for now. Once that’s done, I think we’re just going to try and get in front of as many crowds across the country as possible, and hopefully a few more festival appearances next year.
The Razor's Edge: Are you camping with the fans? Which campsite are you heading for?
Voidwalker:I think most of us are in artist camping, but I know Joe will be in one of the main camps and we’ve got a fair few friends and other bands who have invited us to hang out, so we’ll definitely be “around” for the weekend.
The Razor's Edge: You’ve gotta keep hydrated at Bloodstock, what is your drink of choice for the weekend?
Voidwalker: I go pretty hard on stage so need a good couple of litres of water after our set before I move onto anything more exciting if I can expect to be able to stand the following day - which I know is such a boring answer haha. Can imagine there will be an unhealthy number of beers after that though
The Razor's Edge: See you at Bloodstock in a few weeks!
Voidwalker: Thank you, can’t wait!
