DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Canyoneer
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Canyoneer sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Considering it's a solo project I'll take the liberty of taking three on my own! 'Beacons' from cloudkicker is my favourite heavy album of all time - plain and simple. I find myself inadvertently taking a bit too much inspiration from it often and it never gets old for me. "Shudder" by Bayside: I think it's important to remember when you were young and where you came from. It was my first real foray into "rock" oriented music, and a personal choice of mine to purchase at random as a young person. Reminds me of unrequited love and teen angst. Lastly, "The Stranger" by Billy Joel. It might seem like an odd take, but really creative melodies (haunting at times), varied compositions, and timeless lyrics make it a classic for me.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Jeremy Soule's soundtrack to Skyrim. My favorite video game soundtrack and the visual representation of my favourite fantasy world - and one I'd be happy to escape my deserted island home to.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
A childhood classic, a Shirley Temple. I like alcoholic drinks as much as the next person, but I prefer to consume when I'm happy to become happier, rather than the other way around. Stranded on a desert island alone calls for a sharp, solution-oriented mind that only sugar and grenadine can provide.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
I have a Mastodon shirt made out of the absolute thickest cotton in the universe. It's quilt-like, really. Besides the sick graphic of 'oblivion' on the front, I would imagine it would be a welcome tool for surviving cold nights in the winter.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Well in this case, it would be me, myself, and I - which I am perfectly happy with. I'm a bonafide introvert and do well alone. However, my wife would be a welcome addition. Starting a small colony of metal-heads with New York accents, short in stature, would be a fun anthropological experiment.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
The last time I saw Supervoid Choral Ensemble in Brooklyn. It was a small, makeshift show, but I was blown away, absolutely frickin' mad.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
I owe my friend Michael money for a bass that I essentially stole from him. He definitely wants his money back, so he would come rescue me for sure. I played the long game with this one.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Whoever this random guy was from this blurry youtube video that inspired me to pick up a guitar. He had a blue strat with a tortoise shell pickguard, and he absolutely tore up the solo from 'Alive" by Pearl Jam. I wouldn't be the perpetually frustrated musician I am today without him.
