DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Duskwood

Devil's Island featuring Duskwood.

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we found south west stoner rockers Duskwood sat on the beach. Missing persons reports had been filed, we had seen no trace of them, yet today we find him washed up on our island!

How did they cope with life on Devil's Island? Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Greg: Shogun by Trivium is an absolute masterpiece of an album from heavy guitars to clean acoustic sections, with a fantastic vocal range of screams and clean sections. I think the solos are of virtuoso level as well. For me, it's a masterpiece.
Liam: I'm going to say 10000 Days by Tool. It's got everything from hard hitting songs to droney "get lost in the music" riffs. So yep, that's my choice.
Aaron: It's probably between a few, but I'll go with Songs For The Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age probably because it's my most listened to album of all time and it's got a good range of different songs and vocalists on it. So, I think that would do me good on an island in the middle of nowhere.
Hugh: Kings of Leon Youth and Young Manhood, possibly the greatest first album ever made in my opinion.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Greg: Well, I like the Owl Boy from In Flames. So I pick A Sense of Purpose because it's a cool piece of art.
Liam: So, I'm going to be a bit different and I will say any album work by Shakira because I'll be on the desert island with these ugly bastards and I want a pretty lady to look at.
Aaron: I'm probably going to go with Lateralus by Tool and it's even better if it was a moving bit of art, but I think the whole package alongside the music is real deep, man.
Hugh: Oh that would be Fu Manchu Action Is Go, just because it is a cracking an image of Tony Alva airing off the edge of the pool.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to chose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Greg: Big fan of Camden Hells at the moment so I'll definitely go for that on tap.
Liam: I'm going to go with a strawberry milkshake, however think I need a fridge because it might curdle in the heat.
Aaron: There's a drink that they sell at the Firehouse in Southampton called the Dirty Vimto which is vodka, buckfast and lemonade I think. It did mess me up a bit that night though. I think Hugh got annoyed with me on the long journey home!
Hugh: Yeah, you were pretty chatty! Umm, that's a tricky one. It'll have to be Tribute Ale.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. Whats the merch and for what band?

Greg: I've got Sergeant Thunderhoof long sleeved baseball shirt which is super comfortable and versatile which I imagine on the island would be useful.
Liam: I've got a Clutch trucker hat and it would keep the sun out of my eyes.
Aaron: I've got a extra long Dropkick Murphys hoodie which is really comfortable and seems to be the only thing that fits me these days, as I'm tall.
Hugh: I've got a sweet Kings of Leon hankerchief which I could fashion into some kind of headwear. On those cold, cold nights I could probably sleep under it, as I'm small.

You're sat on the island thinking "I'm stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity"... who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Greg: Probably my fiancé cos she does everything for me.
Liam: Bear Grylls, as he'll know how to keep me alive. I could choose him to keep us alive but couldn't pass up an island with Kiernan Shipka.
Aaron: What, so just you and Bear Grylls all alone eh? Niiice, how romantic.... I'd say my wife, for the same reason as Greg! If not her, Kate Beckinsale clad in her Underworld gear.
Hugh: Jessica Chastain, 100%

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Greg: That's a hard one. Muse from Download 2015 or 16. I wasn't really looking forward to them, but they were just sensational.
Liam: I'm going to say Queens of Stone Age when they played Glastonbury I don't know what year was but it looked incredible incredible. The one with Dave Grohl drumming.
Aaron: Oh man there's been so many great shows. I'm going to say one that I was at, which was the big 4 show from Sonisphere like 10 years ago. 2011 I think maybe. The main reason being I was completely ballbagged throughout the whole show and I can't remember it, but I remember kinda having a good time.
Hugh: My choice would be The Faces live in 1972 on BBC Crown Jewels. Absolute banging performance.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the one musician most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Greg: Aside from Sting, who I hear is quite familiar with messages in bottles, I'd have to go with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, as he'd be able to hop in a jet and, well, hopefully it's easy mode from there on out!
Liam: Les Claypool. He'd help me Sail.......... The Seas of Cheese!
Aaron: Message in a bottle? I guess it would have to be Sting, as Greg mentioned. Even though he is a bit old now, he's bound to have loads of money to send for a chopper. Our old guitarists dad looks a bit like a mix of Sting and Harry Enfield. Fun fact.
Hugh: Old uncle Ted! Ted Nugent seems pretty at one with nature, I feel he could lead a good rescue.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Greg: Easy question! Has to be Aaron, as he's got the most amount of rump to go round, so it seems fair he gets sacrificed. That and I'm pretty sure he'd say me as I'm the next biggest lad, so would get rid of him while I can!
Liam: It would probably be Hughey, he's the smallest so there would be less of a struggle!
Aaron: Definitely Greg. I can imagine him tasting like salted pork. After hearing this, he's bound to be 'salty'....
Hugh: Liam.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Greg: Definitely would have to be my Mum. From my early years where she suggested I learn to play brass instruments, to when I got a bit older and wanted to start playing guitar, she always supported me. Despite making a horrendous amount of racket at home she always encouraged me to practice and keep progressing. And she even comes to some of our gigs now!
Liam: John Garcia. He is the godfather and the voice of stoner/desert rock and he's influenced my vocals the most out of anyone.
Aaron: Up to a few years ago I would have said Josh Homme, but he comes across a bit of a douchebag these days. I think I'd probably have to say the classic Dave Grohl. He just seems like a nice down to earth bloke who gets on with everyone. Always a good way to live your life.
Hugh: Oohhh thats a toughie! Nathan from Kings of Leon, their music and his drumming had a big effect on me from when I first started playing the drums at 14.

As we left the island the Dirty Vimto's were flowing and things were getting messy. I hope the lads are still alive by the time a rescue attempt is mounted.

Whether they make it back or not, their new album 'The Lost Tales' will be released on 28th February!
