Release Round Up

Release Round Up – January 22nd, 2021

Every Friday there is a tidal wave of new music released unto the world. Whilst we try to cover as much as possible here at The Razor's Edge, it's not always possible to review everything. So each week on a Friday we'll round up some of the best new music available, some we've reviewed, some we haven't, but all worth checking out!

Theres a lot of new heavy music hitting the airwaves this week, everything from black metal, death metal, gothic metal, Stoner rock, doom, thrash metal and even some of your traditional heavy fuckin' metal!

Here's what we think you should check out today!

Asphyx

The first big release of the week is Asphyx new behemoth 'Necroceros'. The kings of death metal make a triumphant return with their tenth studio album.

"‘Necroceros’ explodes with a viciousness rarely seen in ‘The Sole Cure is Death’. It’s immediately noticeable that Baayens has been storing up the riffs, ready for unleashing on the rabid fanbase."

You can ready our full review here and check out our interview with Martin van Drunen here.

'Necrosceros' is available everywhere today via Century Media Records.

Therion

The next big release of the week comes from symphonic metal outfit Therion who drop their seventeenth album 'Leviathan' today.

"For this landmark release the band have decided to give the fans what they have been asking for, an album full of all the elements that make a Therion album unique. So that’s male and female vocals, the classical Wagneresque elements with sharp riffing and gorgeous melodic leads."

There is a lot of thrash metal out this week, and we know a lot of our readers are fans of the genre. The most interesting of the releases is Belushi Speed Ball who drop a double E.P. 'Stella 1' and 'Stella 2' which we described as "aggressive crossover thrash with a huge serving of humour, chaos and the downright bizarre." More thrash floods in this week from the likes of Betrayed who drop 'The Unbeliever' via thrashback records, Bloodletter who are out to teach lowly sinners that fast, melodic, thrash metal with their album 'Funeral Hymns' and Indian thrash metal collective Bloodkill who released 'Throne of Control' earlier this week. And not forgetting Hungarian outfit Ektomorf who have returned to their thrash metal roots with the aptly titled 'Reborn'.

For the stoner rock and dooms fans there are a few new releases to look out for. Firstly the unique stylings of Here Lies Man who meld Sabbath inspired riffs with a twist of Afrobeat! Their album 'Ritual Divination' lands today via Riding Easy Records. If bands like Mastodon and Black Tusk are more your bag then Australia's heaviest riff machine Sumeru release their 'Blood Ordinance' E.P. And for a magical mix of sludge, death and doom then there is a new split E.P. from Cyttorak and Revered and Reviled Above All Others  which you can get digitally in a "name your own price" offer on their bandcamp page.

Mindwork

In the death metal arena Mindwork release a new E.P. 'Cortex' which features a guest appearance from fromer Death member Bobby Koelble.

"Combining a classic era tech-death metal approach with a contemporary sound."

20 Watt Tombstone

And then there is the new double single from 20 Watt Tombstone, the self styled death blues duo release covers of ZZ Top classic ‘Just Got Paid’ and then ‘Midnight Train to Memphis’.

"With the promise of further material later in 2021, this small teaser merely provides the first course of what should be a mighty feast."

For you black metal fans German anti-cosmic black metal outfit Urfeind release the harrowing 'Wraiþaz' and Schemer Heer brings bombastic, black metal and horror soundtrack inspired dungeon synth in the interestingly titled 'The Dragon, His Angels and the Exaltation of Death'.

To round things out, atmospheric rock outfit Comatose drop 'A Way Back', Flood Peak release their blackened sludge masterpiece 'Fixed Ritual', and Repaid In Blood meld death metal and metalcore into their self styled "geek metal" with 'Reflective Duality'.

And thats just the tip of the iceberg! There is so much new music out today for you to get your groove on to. Enjoy it all!
