DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Incinery.
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we found Nottingham thrashers Incinery sat on the beach. Their home is far from the sea, let alone our Island, so how did they end up here?

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
DJ: Wolves In The Throne Room – Celestial Lineage. If I’m going to be stuck on this desert island indefinitely, I want to be able to go somewhere in my head, and this album is an expansive soundscape. The songs are dense Black Metal one minute, before opening up into these huge vistas, then other parts are ambient, electronic or choral. An incredible 49 minutes.
SD: It'd have to be Tempo Of The Damned - Exodus, simply because in my opinion it's one of the greatest thrash albums ever made
JC: For me it would probably have to be Exodus – The Atrocity Exhibition – Exhibit A because it’s a modern day thrash masterpiece. It’s what I always strive to sound like and get the most inspiration in Incinery from. The guitar tone is like no other!
CK: I’m known as a thrash guy but I’m gonna throw a curveball here and say In The Constellation of the Black Widow by Anaal Nathrakh. It’s just a solid angry album that is great all the way through and I usually end up repeating it a bunch anyway so I’m used to listening to it over and over
JR: I’m going to go completely different to the rest of the band here as it is in no way thrash or even heavy for that matter. Bad Religion – The Process of Belief. An album that I have loved since it first came out and revisit on a regular basis. One of the few albums that I have found where I 100% like every song on there.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
DJ: Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God. Thor is fighting Jormundgandr while the world is destroyed, it’s everything you want in an album cover.
SD: I'd agree with Deej
JC: Devin Townsend – Ziltoid the Omniscient because Aliens and Ziltoid likes coffee.
CK: Another curveball but I would probably say Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell. In terms of art, the Floyd covers are up there and it’s the sort of thing I could actually spend time looking at
JR: Jane Doe by Converge, still an iconic piece of work for both the image and the album itself.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to chose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
DJ: Jura Prophecy
SD: Bulliet Bourbon
JC: Lime Bay Traditional Mead. My Favourite mead!
CK: Lagunitas IPA, because beer, none of this spirit nonsense like these fools.
JR: Back to the spirit nonsense, probably some form of Patron Tequila
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. Whats the merch and for what band?
DJ: One of them Conan trucker caps, I burn easy.
SD: My trusty Slayer Hoodie
JC: My Syslosis ‘Shred till your dead t shirt’ just for Shredder on the front
CK: My Exodus “Blood In Blood Out” T-shirt I got from the gig where we opened for them
JR: Behemoth ‘The Unholy Trinity’ Camo Tank Top
You're sat on the island thinking "I'm stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity"... who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
DJ: WILSON!
SD: The Kray Twins
JC: Bill Bailey. I’d like him to play me Incinery songs in a jazz lift music style.
CK: Does me but in a wig count? No that would be awful. Brian Cox or Richard Ayoade.
JR: I mean I should say my Wife Lucy of course but if we are going for famous castaways someone useful like Bear Grylls.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
DJ: Subrosa touring one of my favourite albums “For This We Fought the Battle of Ages”, supported by the amazing singer/songwriter Darkher and Kroh at The Rainbow, Birmingham. One of the best gigs I’ve ever been to.
SD: Steve Vai Live at the Astoria London, best live show I've ever witnessed.
JC: Testament earlier this year in Manchester. The set and sound was incredible!
CK: Machine Head at Rock City in 2004 or Metallica doing the whole of Master of Puppets at Download in 2006, they were just phenomenal
JR: Faith No More – Download 2009, not a flashy stage show but one of the best performances I have seen.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the one musician most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
DJ: You want me to say Bruce Dickenson, but I’m pretty sure he can’t land that 747 on this desert island! It’s gotta be Christopher Bowes from Alestorm, they must have a pirate ship right?
SD: Eric Clapton could come rescue me in his massive boat!
JC: Korpiklaani who would bring a viking party ship and just play Vodka and Beer Beer while we drink out of horns! \m/
CK: Fenriz from Darkthrone. He’s actually a postman so I trust him to be a pro at dealing with messages and whatnot. He could then pass it on to someone that owns like a helicopter with proficiency
JR: Devin Townsend, he seems like a nice guy plus he’s Canadian and and I’m sure they are obligated to help out.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
DJ: Sorry Kenny, but now all those Anaal Nathrakh albums you definitely slipped past the interview rules are mine. Prepare for …ENDARKENMENT!!!
SD: Kenny would make a decent meal, I'd eat his liver with some fava beans…
JC: Ste-cinery before he eats us Incinerettes hahaha
CK: Ste, slow cooked, mmmm tender. Also I can then finally evade his touching!
JR: Jason Tacos it is then.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
DJ: Tough question, I guess I’d have to go with Devin Townsend. I’m not sure about my outlook on life although he seems a pretty positive dude, but I love how musically open minded he is and never gets boxed into any one style.
SD: Igor Cavalera just because of his level of experience
JC: Alex Skolnick. If I could play just a ¼ as good as him I would be happy! His leads inspire me the most. Perfect mix of technicality and memorability.
CK: Gary Holt unsurprisingly. Just them riffs, pure chefs kiss
JR: Greg Graffin, Bad Religion again, strongly influenced my style of writing even though it is a different genre and his general outlook on the world.
Before we leave, we congratulate DJ on being the first person in over 50 episodes of Devil's Island to recognise that Bruce Dickinson wouldn't be able to land his plane on this small island!
Sadly there is no room on our boat to help rescue the lads, so with the bar restocked with their favourite drinks we sail off leaving them to fend for themselves.
