DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Rozu

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Rozu.

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we found Colorado based post-hardcore outfit Rozu sat on the beach. Whilst we'd not seen them in the flesh for a while, despite having a new album out, we assumed this was due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Turn's out they were actually stranded on our island.

How did the band cope with life on Devil's Island? Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

David: I have chosen Saosins 'In Search of Solid Ground' because one the album rips front to back, and I love that band. It’s a classic.
Brian: 'Transient' by MAKARI hands down!!! These guys hit all the feels with this album, and reeeeeally polished their sound.
Henry: 'New Junk' by Every Time I Die: it’s bleak like the situation but also a fun summer banger so it’s all moods, yea? Also maybe etids summeriest
Tim: I’d probably have to go with Hands Like Houses 'Dissonants'. The album is so pretty sounding that it would hopefully block out the full panic attack I’m having.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

D: Probably the 'City of Evil' album by Avenged Sevenfold. It’s such a detailed album art and the artist that does most of that bands art is an amazing artist. Plus it's an album I listened to on repeat in my youth.
B: Korn’s 'See You On The Other Side' album was always a favorite of mine to look at as a kid, and the album art was stellar. David Silveria’s playing shaped a lot of how I play.
H: 'Jane Doe' by Converge: I C O N I C
T: Justin Bieber’s 'Purpose' artwork. Justin will save us all I just know it.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to chose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

D: Probably xing tea any flavor because it’s my favorite.
B: For my drink of choice, I always go for a Whiskey. It’s got to be Maker’s Mark.
H: Lemon water. Hydrate to be great dipshit
T: I’d be drinking Ocean vodka with coconut water. Keeping hydrated while also drowning out the pain of my sunburns.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. Whats the merch and for what band?

D: Definitely our gym shorts. Great for hot weather!
B: My August Burns Red shirt - or our Gym Shorts. If I ever lost those... I’d lose my mind!!!... then again, we are already marooned. Might as well go a little nuts eh?
H: Etid fight trunks. They’re tuff as nails and you can swim in em
T: My Thousand Below hat, it will cover my face from further burning.

You're sat on the island thinking "I'm stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity"... who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

D: Probably Tom Hanks because he would know what to do.
B: Only person that could come to mind is my wonderful lady. Other than that, I’d be happy to live shipwrecked with these homies.
H: Edward Scissorhand. He’s emo AF and he could kill me dead which is the only move since I wouldn’t get to wake up next to Tim no more
T: Fuck Tom Hanks! Wilson was the real hero. But seriously though, it wouldn’t feel right if our producer Tyler Ruehl wasn’t stranded with us.

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

D: Probably Blessthefalls set back in November 2011 headlining one of our local favorite venues the Marquis in Colorado. I can just hear the sweat.
B: HOLY COW!!! This is a tape of my first ever Warped Tour! The year is 2010, the entire show has been a blast thus far, but then... All American Rejects hit the stage. One of the most surreal moments of my life. They were so on point, and at the time, it was the most impressive show I’d gone to. It made such an impact on me, and that moment will stay with me forever.
H: Taking Back Sunday live from Orensanz
T: I saw Craig Owen’s do an acoustic set, so I’d choose that. It would soothe me and make DJ uncomfortable so it’s a win win for me.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the one musician most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

D: Honestly, Jared Leto from 30 Seconds to Mars. I feel like he would save us. Plus he has the money.
B: Mr. Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour... “Mr. Taylor, if you’re getting this, we need your help. The Rozu boyos got ourselves into a pickle of a situation, and require rescue from you and all 506 members of Slipknot. Please hurry. DJ is giving me ‘eyes’ and won’t leave me alone.... k bye!”
H: I hear Jimmy Buffet has a boat
T: Ja Rule, Fyre Fest 2.0 will save us all. Ja bring us some of those classic sandwiches while you’re at it.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

D: Would vote Brian because he’s got a lot of meat on his tree trunk of legs.
B: Bye DJ (jk) probably me. My calves will be a great source of protein and should last a while. At least until Corey T and the rest of Slipknot show up.
H: No one PLANT BASED DIET NO EXCEPTIONS sorry murderers.
T: After DJ eats Brian I would eat him for the extra protein he has in his system. I would then learn to live off the land with Henry.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

D: Would probably save Sinister Gates from A7X because he is the reason I picked up guitar in the first place.
B: Woah. I saved my dad! He taught me how to play drums, and was the reason I stayed so focused on it. He was in Drum and Bugle Corp. and is one of the best marching snare players I’ve ever seen. My power and attack come from him, as well as my rhythmic proficiency. Thanks Pops. Love you. Meet Corey and grab a drink on your way to shore.
H: No one. Earth is full, drown to do your part, no rest for dead ghouls.
T: Even though I really agree with Henry here I think the world could spare Spencer Chamberlin from Underoath. Maybe he could teach me how to write better songs.

Sadly there is no room on our boat, so we have to sail away from Devil's Island leaving the band on the beach. We're not sure Corey Taylor will respond to their rescue calls... they may be on their own for a while.
