Release Round Up

Release Round Up - March 5th, 2021

Every Friday there is a tidal wave of new music released unto the world. Whilst we try to cover as much as possible here at The Razor's Edge, it's not always possible to review everything. So each week on a Friday we'll round up some of the best new music available, some we've reviewed, some we haven't, but all worth checking out!

Theres a lot of new heavy music hitting the airwaves this week, everything from black metal, death metal, gothic metal, Stoner rock, doom, thrash metal and even some of your traditional heavy fuckin' metal!

Here's what we think you should check out today!

Witherfall

Witherfall release their latest, unique, album this week melding elemnts of power and progressive metal to great effect on 'Curse of Autumn'.

"Whilst there are a lot of progressive elements in the music they are nearly always within the context of the song so there is very little in the way of excessiveness and musical masturbation."

You can read our full review here, and our interview with Jake and Jospeh here.

Extreme music doesn't get better than this! The new album from death metal outfit Baest, 'Necro Sapiens', is a monster!

"If you want your death metal steeped in classic style but with enough variation to make it contemporary, ‘Necro Sapiens’ is likely to be on your list."

Wolfheart

Death metal fans are in for a treat with the new Wolfheart E.P. dropping today. Two brand new tracks from the band along with two rarities on this pandemic produced E.P.

"Driving blastbeats and ferocious riffing, combined with Saukkonen’s trademark gruff vocals. Meaty songs that continue in the Wolfheart tradition."

For a dose of slam in with your death metal then Bonecarver are the band of the day with new album 'Evil'.

"Mind altering gutturals, filthy guitars and breakdowns all smashed together with ungodly blast beats."

Check out our full review here.

Staying with death metal, there are a few more releases of not this week. Exanimis release 'Marionnettiste', Magefa drop 'Exenteration', Pustilence release the tongue twister 'The Birth of the Beginning Before the Inception of the End' and The Harvest Trail  unleash the barbaric 'Instinct'. You can check out 'Strangled' from the latter's album below!

The Hyena Kill

For something a bit different, we highly recommend 'A Disconnect', the new album from The Hyena Kill, out today on APF Records.

"Sturdy vocals that are both beautiful and angry pepper this album, keeping up with a very talented band who have many tricks up their sleeves and most likely even more in the locker."

Here's our take on it.

Terror

Hardcore fans will be rejoicing this week as hardcore legends Terror return with a new album, 'Trapped In A World'.

"The unpolished nature of the recording piqued the imagination and conjured images a scores of smashed and sweat-soaked bodies locked in pit-combat. Oh for those days again."

Check out our thoughts on this album here.

Nixil

Black Metal aficionados will appreciate the new release from NIXIL, 'All Knots Untied', which the Maryland outfit release today.

"Nixil utilise emotions, blending them into the very blackened hearts of their music. Each track varies in style and delivery, which makes ‘All Knots Untied’ an interesting and captivating listen."

Kjeld

The Netherlands has spawned black metal act Kjeld and this week they release their latest album 'Ôfstân'.

"Fast-paced, yet melodic and harmonious, this is an album that grows with every listen. It’s uncompromising, intelligent, and crafted with precision. Recommended for those who dwell within the permafrost realms."

Archierophant

Atmospheric blackness seeps out of the new release from Archierophant, the solo project from Lewis Borthwick. 'Birds Of Joy And Sorrow' is not top be missed!

"An E.P. that balances crashing black metal with delicate emotive segments, Birds of Joy and Sorrow strikes deep into the emotional well. Elements of the symphonic style of Norwegian giants Dimmu Borgir do come to mind, but there is no plagiarism here."

Paul reviewed the E.P. earlier this week. Check it out here.

And there is mor eblack metal out today in the form of Gorr's 'Kvit Som Snøen, Kald I Blikket' (you try saying that after a few pints!) and Wÿntër Ärvń release 'Abysses'. Whilst DSKNT meld black and death in the masterful 'Vacuum γ-Noise Transition' and Sporae Autem Yuggoth mix death and doom on 'The Plague of the Aeons' E.P.

For punk fans, and specifically those who like the stylings of the Dead Kennedy's and The Clash, this week the wonderfully named Spam Javelin release 'The Three Chords Of The Apocalypse' this week.

"Embracing the ethos of the Punk movement from back in the day, Spam Javelin use their platform to rage against the current establishment machine. The Three Chords of the Apocalypse revels in it’s obnoxious attitude and its disparaging opinion of the world, circa 2020/21, with tracks Herd Impunity and Children of the Shoe acting as vehicles for demanding social change."

If you missed it, our full review is here.

Wolf King

Drawing inspiration from traditional heavy metal, but giving it a blackened twist. Wolf King drop new album 'The Path of Wrath' this week.

"Growls spit forth and the tune slows a while allowing more of the doom to pour over you. The distinct vocals are mixed perfectly in this amalgamation of metal styles, there is no dominant force."

'The Path of Wrath' is released iva Prosthetic records today and you can read our full review here.

UK thrash metal upstarts Blacklist drop a bomb of a new single today in 'Blood On The Sand'.

"The band are tighter than a jar of pickles for a pensioner with arthritis; the searing solo leaves scorch marks, the riffs are an absolute aural assault, and it batters from start to finish."

We reviewed it earlier this week, read here.

Butterfly

Aussie retro rockers Butterfly deliver a new album this week. The first thing of note with 'Doorways of Time' is the stunning album artwork. But how does the album fair?

"37 minutes of music that contains old school NWOBHM sounding metal, with a side serving of psychedelia and the odd more intense metal passage.

It may not be meant as a nostalgia trip, but there is no way that this album can be viewed as anything but, given the sheer swagger of 45 years ago that wafts like lighted joint smoke."

Brazen Bull

The juggernaut that is the new wave of classic British rock shows little sign of slowing down and adding to the list of bands jumping into the genre are Brazen Bull who release their self titled album today.

"There is plenty of the old school included in their sound but there is also a decent contemporary feel to their music."

The sound of the underground reverberates loudly this week as Telford metalcore outfit Recall The Remains release their E.P. 'Dead Dreams'.

"This E.P. delivers on all fronts. All killer, no filler! If you want a sore neck, get banging to this!"

Our full review is here and check out their video below!

Prepare to be crushed by the heaviest riffs of the week! Acid Mammoth release 'Caravan' on Heavy Psych Sounds today and it's brutal.

"Huge fuzzy riffs and an engine room that hums combing at a lumbering, almost glacial pace. The songs are massive, the guitar solos drift on the air as the song slowly moves forward."

Our full review is here.

We're not finished yet!

For alt rock fans, Skinny Knowledge and  The Spill Canvas both have albums out. The resurgence of classic rock continues on KinStrife's new release ' Fools and Monsters' and Void of Visionre-issue their 'Hyperdaze' album under the reworked 'Hyperdaze Redux' title.

Doom fans can rejoice in the beastly Golgotha album 'Remembering the Past - Writing the Future' or bathe in the heavy riffage of Iron man's live album 'Hail to the Riff'. Plus a split E.P. from Ungraven and Slomatics and new albums from both Spelljammer and Recluse.

Traditional heavy metalist's Starscape release 'Colony' whilst Dreamshade drop 'A Pale Blue dot'. Check back on Monday and you might just find Dreamshade washed up on Devil's Island!

Theres also prog rock out today from Hongo Fuu, psyche rock from  King Bogo, and some symphonic death from Nightfall.

And thats just the tip of the iceberg! There is so much new music out today for you to get your groove on to. Enjoy it all!
