Uprising 2022 - The Bands You Cannot Miss!
Uprising returns for the first time since the pandemic this coming weekend, the highlight of the June gig going calendar. For three days the British metal community will descend upon Leicester’s Firebug and O2 Academy venues for some metal fuelled mayhem.
Whilst we know the likes of Famyne (Friday), Orange Goblin/Raging Speedhorn (Saturday) and Damim (Sunday) will steel the show, we look down the bill for some other bands we think you should not miss!
The festival kicks off at Firebug on Friday night with the aforementioned Famyne - fresh off the back of a stunning new album - headlining. But look down that bill and you have the likes of Internal Conflict, Cadence Noir and Syncolima in full support. But the band we recommend you do not miss is Gutlocker!
You’ll see Gutlocker mentioned a lot over the next few weeks here on The Razor’s Edge. They having a new album, ‘To Be Alive’, dropping in July. We’ve already heard it and it is killer. Plus there is a rumour they may get shipwrecked on Devil’s Island fairly soon (keep an eye out for that!). The band are a groove metal outfit drawing inspiration from the likes of Pantera and Lamb of God. However carbon copies they are not, they bring their own take on the genre to the fore. Songs full of heart and emotion whilst maintaining that groove metal battery. Make sure you are in the Firebug early on Friday to catch them!
The Saturday see the festival move to the O2 Academy’s two rooms. Headlined by Orange Goblin (main stage) and Raging Speedhorn (second stage).
However the band we recommend you really check out is Cage Fight! The newest edition to the U.K. hardcore scene, they are the brain child of Tesseract guitarist James Montieth who wanted a side project during lock down to vent his frustrations. Their style of hardcore is layered with lashings of thrash metal and their self titled debut is a blistering assault on the senses. I’m the live arena this assault continues (as we found at when they supported Sepultura last week), think old school Stampin’ Ground and you’d not be far from the truth. Cage Fight take to the second stage at 5:30 on the Saturday - do not miss them, in that small room it will be intense.
For Sunday the festival returns to the Firebug headlined by Londoners Damim with a line up that includes the likes of Fury, Ghosts of Atlantis and more.
But there are two stand out bands on the Sunday you just cannot miss!
First up we recommend you check out GURT! Not heard of Gurt before? Where have you been for the last decade? The UK’s answer to Crowbar fronted by the ever inspiring Gareth Kelly, once described as the Mick Jagger of sludge metal - when you see them you’ll know why! For many it will be the first time they see Gurt post pandemic and we all cannot wait. Expect classic tunes ‘Sludge Puppies’, ‘Weed It and Weep’ and more from the cream of the U.K. sludge crop.
The second band you cannot miss on the Sunday at Firebug is Desert Storm. They’ve been around long enough to establish themselves on the British stoner rock scene. Once described as the heirs to Orange Goblins throne, these boys now how to deliver.
The pandemic saw a line up change for the lads on bass but that did not slow their momentum at all. In recent years they’ve added a progressive element to their stoner sound, further enhancing the sound they deliver. They are ones you cannot miss!
So there we have it, a brief highlight of what is to come this weekend.
