Release Round Up - February 12th, 2021
Every Friday there is a tidal wave of new music released unto the world. Whilst we try to cover as much as possible here at The Razor's Edge, it's not always possible to review everything. So each week on a Friday we'll round up some of the best new music available, some we've reviewed, some we haven't, but all worth checking out!
Theres a lot of new heavy music hitting the airwaves this week, everything from black metal, death metal, gothic metal, Stoner rock, doom, thrash metal and even some of your traditional heavy fuckin' metal!
Here's what we think you should check out today!
There are a few "big" releases this week and we start our round up with Love And Death, the project featuring Brian "Head" Welch of Korn.
"That familiar Welch guitar sound rasps through the speakers as ‘Tragedy’ kicks in and Welch takes us through his heartfelt story."
You can read our full review here and look out next week for our interview with the band!
Next up up is a band at the front of the new wave of classic rock movement. Inglorious return today with their forth studio album.
"It’s as slick as a buttered eel on a marble floor. It’s crisp, refined and overall a fine record which will no doubt be lapped up by fans of the band and those who are more casual participants alike."
Like the sound of that? Check out the review and video for ingle 'Medusa' here.
The late, great Ronnie James Dio gets the re-release treatment as two of the mans live albums are repackaged. Both 'Holy Diver Live' and 'Evil or Divine' come out on limited edition vinyl with a lenticular 3D albums sized art piece along with 3LP 180g black vinyl / triple gatefold.
We revisited these albums here.
Back on the rock front, The Pretty Reckless release album 'Death by Rock and Roll' today.
"Mixing influences through the pantheon of Rock & Roll and adding blues, psychedelia and modern country elements, Death By Rock & Roll feels very much like a nostalgic trip through the heart of musical influence."
Read what we thought here.
And thrash metal titans Sacred Reich also get the re-issue treatment. The bands long out of print classic albums get re-released by Metal Blade Records with all sorts of flashy vinyl on offer.
"'From the raw, uncompromising debut 'Ignorance' with the unforgettable opener 'Death Squad' and the thrash metal classic of the title track leaves little doubt of the force that Sacred Reich can muster."
We checked them out earlier this week, read here.
For all you black metal fans, there are a few releases of note. Hogstul release 'Ominous Fragmenta Tuptdalr' and Torresian Call and Welldweller release a split album. Whilst Surut blend blackend hardcore with blackgaze in their self titled album which we described earlier this week as "a collection that is brimming with ideas and scope and you’ll find yourself coming back to it time and again.". You can read our full Surut review here.
Checking in on the heavier side of releases, theres plenty of Doom to chose from. Cincinnati, Ohio doom quartet Blessed Black release 'La Brea' and DayGlo Mourning release 'Dead Star'. And Crawl Below a one man wrecking machine releases '9 Mile Square' today which we checked out earlier this week.
However, the big doom release this week is the fittingly titled 'We Are Doomed' from the UK's Indica Blues. Released via APF Records today, we reviewed it here, and you can check out the single below!
For you death metal fans out there Grand Cadaver release an E.P. of epic proportions.
"Combining elements of death metal with traditional thrash, doom and even elements of progressive rock, ‘Madness Comes’ is four tracks curled into a frenzied clenched fist of an E.P."
We reviewed "Madness Comes' earlier this week, you can read our thoughts here.
For a look on the darker side of things, you can absorb yourself in Välde, the new album from Humanity's Last Breath.
"Huge waves of tumultuous riffs cascade down, in tandem with the sonic barrage there is a nod to a post metal direction with ambient and dissonant soundscapes all hinting at the prospect that a deeper, richer and supremely textured death metal album is unfolding."
Robbie dived head first into this one in his review earlier this week.
If you like power metal or even a bit of prog Immortal Guardian mix the two with their new release 'Psychosomatic'.
"Tighter than a pair of budgie smugglers on a sun tanned 80’s holiday maker"
If you like your music as tight as a pair of budgie smugglers then you can read the full review here.
And thats not all, there is plenty more out today!
In the alt-rock sphere, Shape of Water release 'Lockdownon Mars', Death metallers Pyre re-release 'Chained to Ossuaries' and experimental metal outfit God Is An Astronaut release 'Ghost Tapes #10'.
Blue Hour Ghosts have a melodic album to cast your ears on in 'Due' which we reviewed here. Forlorne Hope release a new single 'To The Bitter End' and Father Before Me also have a single out in 'Until Lambs Become Lions' (reviewed here.)
For some melodic death metal check out Ablaze My Sorrow's new release 'Among Ashes and Monoliths'. The Mercy Kills have a new E.P. in 'New Rule'. Stone Mammoth drop the monstrous self titled album and Black Pyramid re-release their own self titled album.
And thats just the tip of the iceberg! There is so much new music out today for you to get your groove on to. Enjoy it all!
